English - How to Teach Comprehension Cloze
-
Thks Janet for the explaination!
Yes, it’s really very difficult to teach the compre cloze especially
when ds hve selected a word, he will just mentally block all other possible ones… -
I went through some assessment books with cloze as well as past year papers...printed out them and classified under diff themes like 'history', 'animals' etc. But still it's difficult to score well
This is a 15 mark section...really wonder how to get at least 8-9 correct out of 15. Comprehension OE is already a killer and I dare not put high hopes there. -
I have a similar problem for my dd too; compre OE and compre cloze kill!

I am using Teachers' Circle Eng. The Compre passages can kill !!! My son complains each time I ask him to do the practice paper. Conquer Comprehension is quite tough, esp those in 'advanced' section but not tough enough to give my son the 'real' exam feel. -
Any recommendation book just on this area use by parents here ? P4 onwards level…

There are simply toooooooo many assessment books in the market until I all blur :frustrated:
Was clearing out my bookshelf and found my nicely-filed but unread LITTLE RED DOT (2010). Remembered reading somewhere that mentioned about having to read widely and that a lot of the passages are from newspapers. So I have decided to stop getting assessment books on compre cloze. WIll instead 'BLANKO' some of the words in my LRD articles and then make my kids do assessment and read news at the same time.
One stone 3 birds - clear cupboard, read news, do assessment. :boogie: -
cwc, you have given a great idea here. For me will target ST articles. Will start busy with \"Blanko-ing\" and keeps child busy to improve this section. Cheerios !

Hi Mum1113,
Glad to be of help
FYI, I have a P4 & P5.....tried to use ST before, but I find the articles may be a little too 'chiem' for my kids cos' their English standard like mommy, quite poor siah. Sometimes, a little too lengthy too.
Personally, I liked Little Red Dot as it has a few levels of difficulty and tailored for Pri kids. More graphical and kinda summarizes the story/news.
See if you can get your hands on them.
I remembered seeing another called 'What's up' and 'IN'...thot it's for Sec level but I saw RGPS P4 girls with them..........that one definitely more chiem than IRD. -

We meet here again: How are you? Your kids just finish paper Monday rite? So now \"pressure off\"
Can enlighten me what is Little Red Dot ? :thankyou: -
Hi Champion,
Yes, both kids finished on Mon....but we already start to relax on last Fri
Now is just waiting for results to be released...... :nailbite:
Little Red Dot is a magazine aimed at primary school students published by The Straits Times that was launched in 2005. (google info
)
Subscription only through schools and some schools used it as learning resource. It's issued weekly on Tues with ST, about ~20 pages, drawing board size.
My son subscribed but school dun seem to really use it, but I kept them as I find it's good. Just haven't got the discipline to get the kids to go through them....but intend to start from this Jun Holiday. Perhaps I'll try to snap a few photos to upload for those who has yet to see it.
Perhaps you can ask your DD's school about it......
Likewise, 'IN' is targetted for Sec level.
