Hey I remembered those days. Dad brought us to this open-air cinema in Jurong. They have 'seats' for cars, and then you just hang those metallic speakers onto the car doors with it's monotone output and we were happy as a lark. Who heard of stereo in those days.

Ya, I remember going there once (or twice?) as well in my dad's car! Those days on-screen were Jackie Chan's movies. Quite a staple each CNY to go watch Jackie Chan!
      :nunchuk:

And those people staying near the open-air cinema can watch silent movie from their windows. I used to envy them and asked if we could get a flat there πŸ˜‰

        Happy Mama:

I remember the 26-inch TELEFUNKEN colour TV my parents bought. Stylo mylo... got 2 sliding doors somemore. Looked more like a cupboard than a TV. πŸ˜‰

 yes, and we are always so happy when they open it as time for TV

Ya, ours also sounded like this, with the soft sliding doors on both sides! Also remembered watching black and white Ultraman shows on it. Now I wish we still have this type of TV ie. can always lock it up to control the TV watching from my son!

this used to be the 1 of the IN place for family outings

I was :yikes: when they decided to tear this building down...I thought it was such a landmark...

Wah, I miss this place so much! Not that I went to this place often but I always thought the architecture was very unique and quite out of the world! Went to the Van Cleef Aquarium couple of times and swam very often at the swimming pool next door. The swimming pool only recently they got rid of it. How come they get rid of this National Theatre?

Everyday I pass by this place enroute to work and still feel so regretful. Why don't they just rebuild another brand new one with exactly the same design? I like this much better than the Durian Esplanade!

          Such an icon!

And we use the bottle caps to play and even made percussion instruments. I find our childhood \"games\" more creative than our kids nowadays.

yah and most of them DIY too

They are what made us what we are today, a creative bunch of senior brothers and sisters πŸ™‚ They are also the reason why we keep telling our kids how \"lucky\" they are for having the conveniences that we did not enjoy. On the flip side of the coin, they are also the essential components of learning and experimenting that I find so lacking in Primary schools today. In an age of abundance, there is no \"needs\" that drive the creation of innovative ideas to come from meeting these needs. There is little value placed in being able to create clever games from sticks, stones, bottle caps, kites when all the child needs to do is to wait for the next Playstation or Gameboy title. We have become a society of consumers, as opposed to a community of curious and eager learners.

Yeah it was so iconic and hence ironic that they demolished it.

after so many years that place still has no redevelopment.....may be wait for sky higher land price then tender out, so as not to raid the national reserve ??!!

Until today I still feel regretful (resentful?) like this too. Why demolish when they just leave the place empty like that? It seems like one of those issues that they just do what they want regardless of sentimental values.... If it weren't already so long ago, probably would be a political issue of today.....but we all seem to have long memories hor?

Am surprise quite a number of ksp here feel like I do too! :hugs:

If you have time, you must go and read the first 30 to 40 pages of this thread. There was one such thread previously, about childhood memories/games etc and Chief merged it with this \"Senior\" thread the other night. :celebrate: There are more fond memories in those pages. Go and take a look, it's worth reading. πŸ†’
