English Assessment Books

Hi Mummies with P5 kids,
Do you get your kids to do all-in-1 Eng assessment or individual ones like Grammar, Vocab etc ? When I actually planned the June schedule, itโs really quite shortโฆdonโt know if I should tell son to do individual books or all in 1 like Challenging English. This June, will need to work more on his Comprehension OE, comprehension cloze and synthesis.
Any advice ? Thanks. -
Janet, for the SA1 : I used school papers. I picked 2 sets of school papers to do in full, the rest of the schools - just do the areas he is weak in ie. grammar cloze and compre.

Got it, thanks. -
Is it sufficient just doing assessment books?
Do parents here still send your kids to enrichment/tuiton class?
Any recommendation for a good center?
TIA

Hi Janet,
As I know, most of the kids have issues on comprehension questions.
As schools don't really teach them comprehension individual skills.
My suggestion for you is to get individual assessments.
Most importantly is to target on your child's weak points. -
I bought this for my son to practise on his comprehension skills.
Great assessment and worth to invest.
This series instills key comprehension skills through extensive practice in one skill area at a time.
A set of10 books (9 different skills books + 1 guide).
I have attached the link. Do take a look.

Yes, comprehension OE is indeed a big problem. 10 questions 2 marks each....I've printed out all the passages in past year papers which were extracted from Readers Digest and Straits Times. Yet to come across an assessment which is good for comprehension. This June, we will be working on individual assessments. Thanks for your advice.

I went for DD1's PTM this morning and get to speak with her FT/EL T. He also suggested that I start to subscribe Readers Digest for DD1 to read  ..For The Straits Times let her flip through it everyday to pick up articles to read but :censored: those that are not appropriate for their age
He also asked and which type of books DD1 is reading so he suggested that my DD1 circled those words/phrases she does not understand. After finishing reading the whole book, go back to those circled word, checked it out from the dictionary and copied the meaning into a note book. He even asked mummy (that's me) to counter-check the note book and reward her for every 50 new words learnt :imcool: :rahrah: ....Haha, now I understand what people always meant \"teacher-parent collaboration\" :hi5:
Last suggestion (and actually I asked his opinion) he said was to download those past year school exam papers but allow the child to practice only the OE compre since this is always the killing part also my DD1's weakest area (4/10)
Guess this June very busy to buck-up lioa :imcool: -
Hi Champion, your kid is in P3? All the work that parents aim to do this holiday is making me - a laid back mummy nervous :nailbite:

I've bought the past year school papers and singled out those schools which have passages extracted from Readers Digest. This June will be buck-up time.

Some of the passages are really tough
terrible...much time needs to be spent here but yet this is not a 'sure pass' section and I feel shouldn't spend too much time in this section.
