hi parents, can someone enlighten me... on Pri 3 class standings... which classes are the better ones and which are the so-called not-so-bright ones?

the top 44 students from P2 results are in 3A now, and the next 40-44 in 3B etc.
the best would be A and B.
The next reshuffling would be in P5 based on P4 results. But its still possible that they reshuffle in P3 if you really do very badly by SA2. You would be move from A to the back class.

The class size is 44? So big? I heard they cut down to 8 classes instead of 10 in P1/P2, so should be around 38 per class right?
Yes, average of 40 students in a class. I believe the not so good classes has lesser students.
      from P3 onwards , down from 10 to 8.
u have some particular concern or issues in mind?

More individual attention is required for the students as they progress to upper primary, yet the class size is getting bigger, leaving each student even less attention. Also, with the so called \"elite\" classess, attention and resources will be on them and the not-so-good classess will become even worst in terms of academic performance. This leads to a win-lose situation and is due largely to the elite system in S'pore.

My understanding with my son’s last year P2 teacher is P3A to P3C are the better ones whereas P3D to P3H are balloted , there is no so called not so bright class.

Actually from the SA1 result, you can roughly figure out how your child stands from the level position. One of the feedback I have given to the teacher is to provide parents with a max, min, average scores for each subjects. Now I can only know his class average score rather than his level average scores.

My personal feel is most schools are focusing on two group of students, elite and not so good. Elite is to maintain school high ranking. Not so good is to prevent the overall passing percentage drops. The average students are the ones that are receiving lesser attention than the rest. Again this is my personal thought.

I don’t think the school is focusing only on the elite and not so good only. I have a nephew and a niece in the same school, both with different degree of learning difficulties, and both have been greatly encouraged and helped by the teachers, and I can see improvements in their school work.

My personal opinion is, best teachers may not be teaching in the best class. The definition of "best teachers / good teachers" differs, so to me, the best teachers are those who can engage, motivate and instill interest in the subject topics for the pupils, regardless of which class they teach. As long as the child has interest in what he is learning, he will improve, and every improvement is a step towards success.

Speaking of max scores, DS' classmate scored full marks in Maths for both assessments & performance tasks in both term 1 & 2. We heard of it bcos teacher gave him an extra prize in class 4 the perfect score.

So 100% would b the max score for P2 SA1 Maths this year. :udaman:

Don't think i want that kind of stress of knowing the max score. The next qn would b how many kids r getting the max score & so on... :siam:
I m happy as long as DS is minimising his careless mistakes & showing a good understanding of the topics tested.
On the other hand, imagine how the child would feel when s/he realised that his/her score is the min score.

Yup, showing improvement is v important.

I'm not sure abt other sch but last year i was heartened & touched to c that NC awarded students who had shown the greatest improvement.

Popular vouchers were given in class for some levels but the P6 student was commended during the sch prize giving ceremony. To me, this is a very strong signal of the sch's commitment towards improving each kid's grades.

Going from P2 to P3 is a jump.

My ds grades drop. It is hard to measure based on just the grades.
Knowing the level performance will help parents to understand if the kids are in pare with the rest.

Teachers can have the statistic ready for parents who are interested to know and share it during the teacher-parents session.

It is true that the 3A / B / C classes this year are pupils who scored better in P2, and the Principal had asked parents of 3A & 3B to stay behind to talk about Higher Chinese. But frankly, as a parent who has sit through the session (more than once because I have another child in upper primary), the impression I get is, unless you want to target SAP secondary school, higher chinese will only spread your child's time thinner. For the P5 this year, 5A and 5B takes HCL, 5E (or F), if I am not wrong, also takes HCL. Difference is, 5A / B are recommended by school, 5E (or F) are parents' decision. For the P6 this year, more than 20 pupils dropped HCL after P5, so it is not an easy subject to start with, in addition to the current 4 subjects.

Anyway, I am not sure how the classes are segregated (didn't bother to find out), but if they are based on targeted learning, smaller classes might actually be good for the pupils, could also be due to pupils who transferred out of the school, etc. ...
