I think the contact numbers for the school bus operators are on the NYPS website. You can call and check with them about this year's routings and timing, which will give you an idea of what to expect.Any NYPS kiddo staying in Punggol/Hougang?
Is there any school bus & how long is the ride? -
Do the kids get lockers? I’m hoping there’s no need to lug textbooks to and fro in a huge bag…
-
All the kids get a locker each. You'll need to provide a padlock - extra key or number code (for number locks) to be passed to teacher for safe-keeping. Depends on kids, some use them, some don't, some store 'rubbish'. Most textbooks/files/jotter books/etc are stored at the back of the classrooms.
To give you a gauge, my son uses one of those SPI bags (small) - normally OK with a couple of activity books, diary & silent reading story book & notebooks (for his scribblings), except when he has to cart his files back home for signatures. It's the water bottle in the side pocket that makes it heavy. Prefer it that way so that he has BOTH hands to balance himself when climbing up the stairs. YES, NYPS has many staircases to climb, especially for the P1 & P2 who are located on the 'hilltop'

And my SILLY HB just realised he was from NYPS, which means our son will have higher chance of getting into NYPS. -

I remembered the Principal ever mentioned that as long they are in NYPS, there will be school buses available....

CCAs are optional for P3 and compulsory from P4 (at least one). P1 & P2 can join but some have to go for selection (read FOC) to ensure that they are competent enough to participate together with their seniors... e.g. chess. Thanks for your feedback, hmsg and mickeyhmh. So nice to know that there aren't loads of homework

I was just checking out the CCA page at NYPS' website:
http://www.nyps.moe.edu.sg/
Looks like most of the sports and performing arts groups are for >P2 or upper primary kids. String ensemble requires Grade 3 violin.
There are also some enrichment (read paying $$$) like gym, art, robotics, lorna whiston english, Julia Gabriel english, maths, science, etc... -

Just spoke to my parents about it and they are considering getting a property in that vicinity for their precious grandson. Which means weekdays we'll stay with my parents & weekends we'll stay at our own place.mrswongtuition:

Wow... you've been sitting on a gold mine all this time without realizing it huh?
Good for you that you found out in time. Maybe you should consider moving to Bukit Timah? -
Hi hmsg and mickeyhmh,
Thanks for fielding questions from us, newbie NYPS parents.
Another question....read from the Ai Tong thread that the P1 students are expected to already know Hanyu Pinyin (HYPY) upon start of school. Does NYPS has this requirement? Or do they start teaching HYPY from scratch?
My DD's kindy doesn't teach them HYPY, so not sure whether to start teaching her ourselves, or enroll her in some class.
Thanks! -
Hi BigDevil
IMO, I don't think it's a MUST to learn beforehand, just an advantage. It won't be much of a problem if your DD is a good reader.
My son started reading English books quite early. His kindy didn't teach HYPY either. We just got him a couple of K2 assessment books & Chinese story books with Chinese & HYPY words. He coped well in school for T1 & T2.
They are more into Chinese char starting from T3.
If you are really 'kiasu', you might want to enrol her in one of those HYPY/P1 preparation 'crash course' organised by some of the language centres during the Dec hols. Look out for them.
