I'm just curious.
My kids are still in kindy, and I do send them for enrichment lessons, more to get them out of my hair for awhile.
This is one thing I do not understand, aren't teachers suppose to teach and help weaker students to improve? I understand there are 40 students per class, but I think there's something fundamentally wrong when teachers suggest to parents to send their kids for tuition.
I mean, it's ok if parents wish to send their kids to tuition, it's their choice. But for a teacher, whose profession is to teach, to suggest it, I just feel that it's weird. I mean it's their responsibility to ensure that their students understand the work.
:goodpost: :rahrah:
Do the teachers expect the students to understand what it's being taught immediately. If they don't, then it's off to tuition centre and not extra time with teachers? I know teachers are a busy lot but teaching is the basis for the profession. -

Yes, teachers are a busy lot, however I do not understand why school teachers do not do their part to make sure students understand what is taught. I pissed off with this. During Parent-Teacher meetings, teachers inform parents which areas kids are weak in. PERIOD. To me, it's like, 'So ? Isn't it your job to make sure my child understands what is taught ? Why do kids attend school then ?'SAHM_TAN:

I remember I had tuition when I was in secondary school, as we don't understand our Maths teacher. 90% of the class doesn't understand what she is teaching so we all go look for tuition teacher. Really, what for kids go to school if it is the tuition teacher who make them achieve good result. Might as well consider 'homeschooling' and get tuition teachers to teach at home.

Kids attend school because they have to...if I had known that school teachers passed on their responsibilities to the parents, I would have home-schooled my kids. I get to save money on uniforms, school shoes, textbooks and time. Ultimately, they attend school to pass exams right ?
I got a tutor to give individual attention for my son as he failed his CA1 & SA1.
Asked my hubby why teacher can't teach techniques so that kids know how to answer prob sums...he told me they are not supposed to...just don't understand the reason :scratchhead:
Same goes for Science  teacher doesn't give any materials to help students to pass. His class is strong in Science, scoring higher marks than level median...I suppose they attend enrichment lessons. -

Hi Janet, can you share the reason yr hubby give? It is indeed baffling. :?Kids attend school because they have to...if I had known that school teachers passed on their responsibilities to the parents, I would have home-schooled my kids. My kids are still in kindy. I thought for problem sums, the students use model method? In Science if teacher don't give material to pass, what do the teacher teach during Science period? Thanks for sharing -
SAHM_TAN:
For P4, son was encouraged to use models...at P5 however, he can use whatever method he wishes...as long as he can use it correctly. There is algebra and many other methods not taught in school, bcos the teacher is afraid to confuse her students.

That's all this idiot mum knows about Maths.
As for Science, my boy doesn't have materials from school...yet he is supposed to analyse and apply concepts to pass. The teacher uses the pathetic textbook to teach. -

Just teach it as another option that kids can use, kids will understand if it is taught in a coherent manner. I know that there are some schools who invite teachers from the Sakamoto method franchise to teach their maths teachers and students to use this method.
I don't understand, do teachers think analytical skills can just suddenly happen in P3? It must be guided process before a child can think in a certain manner. Maybe GEP kids are different, but I think in normal circumstances thinking skills need to be taught, like the process of thinking, before it's \"automatic\".
I don't understand, if don't give inputs how to have outputs????? Is MOE in cohorts with the tuition industry? -
SAHM_TAN:
what is the Sakamoto method ? do they teach the various heuristics or it's another method of solving problem sums ?
