      LOLMum:
so it means the child must be able to speak, write, recognise and understand chinese in p1. which means that he must definitely have chinese tuition at a very early age. 😓 stress

Yes because it is assumed that it is mother tongue(the subject name), something learned since birth or before birth.

The stress only comes in if the child, in a non-SAP school, wants to start HCL early as it is optional even when it is offered. The real stress comes when you enrol in a SAP school as it is part of curriculum

        phtthp:
maybe call up school, do some homework first, find out to check - how does the school arrange for pupils to enter into different P1 classes, by what criteria ?

is it by the order of registration in sequence, or is it in random order ?
find out for P1 Term 1 2012 - does the school set tests for the pupils to enter different classes ? if Yes, which subject tested ?

eg: some schools set Chinese tests for P1 Term 1.
so even if you request for yr friend's child and yr child to be together in the same P1 class initially, they may get separated again.
:yikes: thought P1 no more test liao.. why am I seeing so many stars now.. :nailbite:

How does school know that we are PV of that school?

On the day of registration, what to produce to school
to verify that we are PV? So far, we have not received
            anything from school.

in my case, the letter was only received in early July. Need to produce the letter during registration.

PVs should be very clear if they qualify (ie just have to hit that number of hours required by school). You can call up the school to ask when they will send you the letter. Mine was received very early...so early until I was puzzled if this is that precious letter (before MOE even announced the registration dates).

It is unlike those for church/clan membership where they may restrict the number of letters they issue. Once parents fulfil their side of the bargain, they should have every right to register their child during P2B.

Actually I think the testing may start during orientation. Some schools tell you the class the child is in BEFORE orientation - then no test. Others will conduct 'activities' for the kids - mine kena and to me, it smacked of being a test becos we only know the class AFTER orientation day.

I hear some schools siao on, they will give a list to parents (probably term 2) to indicate when is this/that test. It's pretty bite sized I think. My kid's school keep quiet and silently conduct the tests - after the fact, they will bring a whole load of papers with marks and all.

Don’t stress lah. In P1, esp early days, just get the child acquainted with primary school life. Only parents are stressed by the test (and this only if they want to).

I figure I can get stressed later, so trying very hard not to start now. Am taking the test as a barometer to measure how much he knows and which areas we should work on.

Just pray for a good teacher who doesn’t give much homework. I’ve heard parents telling me almost everyday their kids will have homework…and was secretly glad that mine doesn’t. whew.

Tao Nan practise having the teachers writing down any assigned homeworks on a corner of the whiteboard, so that if 1 teacher had assigned some homeworks, the others will avoid doing so. However, I do know that some students had to complete school works at home that they could not complete in class.
