Hello, u gals think abacus is good for ur kids? My DD is currently having abacus lessons but I am not sure how useful is it for her.....how long into the lesson will you then see 'results'?

How long depends on the kid. I find that useful for my kids as both of them are using abacus for mental computation.

Personally I feel it's a good exposure for the kids n it helps build their confidence. Child is no longer afraid of big numbers n it helps in no. bondings...develop good concentration skill and ability to focus too....my girl is also with MPM this yr n so far we are happy with her progress too.... 😄

              Hi Parents,
:imsorry: for intruding into this thread...

Got a hand on the above book which a friend loan to me for reading. Find that it is a good guide book for those who want to know for about Primary School's Maths 😄 .

For me, I was like 😓 cos my DD1 already in P3, DD1 going to P1 next year and there are many terms I am still unfamiliar with for according to my friend, should have known by P3 and the rest by P4, P5 & P6.

IMO the abacus is not really useful for Pri schoolers, the use of abacus is more relevant to right/left brain training. My niece’s abacus ability is very good as she has advanced to mental calculation (meaning able to do calculation without the the use of abacus) and has even participated in 3 abacus competitions. In her primary schooling years (this year is Pri 3), I have not really seen her using abacus to its full use. In fact, nowadays Maths is all about modelling.

Hi Champion, I understand how you feel coz I am coaching my niece in her schooling. Likewise, I have been getting myself familiarize with her studies. My niece loves Maths alot and that is most probably because in her pre-school years, I have introduced alot of concrete learning and her foundation in Maths and thinking skills is good to be able to sustain to Primary schools.

Now I am doing that for my sons who are not in primary school yet. IMO I feel that in order to prepare the child for primary school maths, parents must do loads of concrete learning with the child. That is the only way. No amount of worksheets can help if the foundation is not set right. Worksheet can only kill the child's love for learning. Concrete learning is like Montessori style. That is my humble opinion.

Thanks for the info. Strange that the largest Popular outlet doesn't stock the book :?
