All About Full-Time Maids
-
I thought this was already in place? Else why am I paying my maid more each month for the leave she doesn’t want to take? I don’t understand why this is being brought up again unless they are thinking of hammering more money out of employers.
Yes, every family is different. My maid finishes her chores about noon and then ‘retires’ to her room to do I dunno what (read maybe). Late afternoon she’ll come out to help prepare vege and meat for dinner (she don’t have to cook). After cooking, she’ll wash up. By 7.30pm or 8, she’ll go bathe and then back to her room. I see her lights out by 8.30pm. This has been her and my previous maid routine for the past 3 years.
She’s not asking for day offs, but taking her as an example, I would wonder if her life is that difficult to warrant day offs. In fact, the ex-maid used to take naps even (no wonder at night she complain cannot sleep) until my son innocently told us that he saw her sleeping in the afternoon (he was to take nap, but ended up someone else is in dreamland). -

When my kids are older, yes, I do not mind giving my maid off day every week. But with 3 pre-schoolers and another bb on the way...I really need my maid to help out (especially on weekends).
I think it is inevitable that it will happen eventually but the question is when and whether people really follow it.ZuEn:
Anyone saw the news about possibility of giving one compulsory day off to maid ever week? Not fair.
I always tell my colleagues that I am starting my other full time job as a mummy after office hours. Already cannot cope and Government wants us to give mandatory day off to maid.
I am dreaming of the day that I can be maidless. I hope to do so when DD goes to Primary One, which is 4 years away. Boohoo.
I thought it was interesting that one of the maid agencies was quoted as saying it would results in a \"lower quality of life\" for employers. Would it really?
I don't think there are really very many people who would suffer that much if they gave their maid a day off. I understand that there is a small minority with elderly sick members of the family who need 24 hour supervision who would have their weekends restricted if their maid had a day off but surely in these cases all the more the maid needs a break. And most should have someone else in the family who can help out.
All over the world many families have both parents working full-time and they manage to survive so I think we have to be realistic and manage on our own for one day a week.
I agree that it's nice to have a maid 7 days a week but it is a luxury not a necessity for most of us. My maid takes 2 Sundays off and on those Sundays when she is around it is nice to be able to go out to lunch and relax over dessert or coffee with friends while she entertains the children but it's an added perk rather than something we really need. In some ways I actually enjoy not having her around as my children are \"mine\" again if you know what I mean. -

But don't you think it's sad that we can't look after our own children even for one day. Yes, my three (7,4,3) can be hard work when they are all together and I need eyes at the back & sides of my head but they are our children, shouldn't we be able to handle them for a day?

I am already handling my child on my own... Most ppl who is pro to this idea of mandatory off days... are assuming that we dont take care of our kids.. but is it really so?? I, for one, takes care of my kid... my maid helps out only if I can't be there... (e.g. shower, toilet breaks, doc's visit)

Not every family have both parents resting on wkends... my hub is busy and at work whenever the common folks are resting... so where does that leave me?? I can handle my kid, but i can't handle the housewk for the day as well... cos' i would have to have my full attention on him... thus, I have gone for the option to pay more to my maid for no off days... I think so long as we still make sure that the maid is eating well, and getting enough rest... that should be reasonable... plus, we'll treat the maid nice so long as she is wkg well...
It's just stresses me that the govt is making such suggestions... without even thinking of families that requires more help... Not every family have the luxury to have both parents resting on wkends... -
OK - one more comment then I’ll shut up before you all start to hate me
Is there really any necessity for you to do housework on her day off? Surely the house doesn’t need cleaning if she is doing it on other days? All you need to do is cook and/or buy food and tidy up any major mess that the children make.
My husband doesn’t officially work weekends but if we are at home he is often working (or watching TV) so I’m pretty much on my own. -
If you have a kid who is allergic to dust, asthmatic… you’ll need to clean the house… even more so if your unit faces the road… that’s why I say every household is different…

My working hours are pretty long and hb works on almost every weekend and PH.
Of course I can let the maid have her off every week so as to recharge. But who toils bcos she needs to recharge? So it is Ok for the mummy to suffer a burnout. Great! -

Yes, when my maid is off (which is 3 times a month), we do that as well. On weekends, I am (a SAHM with 4kids aged 3 to 9yrs)\"worse off\" so I take little breaks on weekdays (eg, have my cup of coffee after sending kids, surf internet). DH works from home each sunday afternoon too. We do not do much housework on Sunday & will eat dinner at my mum's place. Lunch is also settled outside and its the only day when the kids get to eat whatever they do not get to eat regularly (eg. their favourite is pizza and fish and chips for sunday lunch)

IMHO, I would rather she takes a day off each week than take it out on the children. You can tell when the maid is tired of their work and their tone is different etc.....
