Junior Sports Academies

Hi,
I know there are a few schools offering Badminton as JSA. Can some parents please share their experience?
1) How many students taking JSA Badminton in that school?
2) What facilities (e.g., no of badminton courts)?
3) How is the training? (how many days a week, how long each session, coach-student ratio, how do they conduct training)
4) For those attending JSA from another school, what happens if the training schedules clash with the school (e.g., some schools have supplementary classes, exams after school hours)? Are JSA training throughout the whole year or are there breaks during school holidays or exam periods?
5) What’s next after JSA?
Thanks! -

Hi Breeze,
Dear flametree,
it has been while since the last discussion on JSA - an update! My DD got into JSA badminton, I am happy for her. Hope she takes on a positive attitude towards this... the training is going to be demanding I think!
Thanks for your help again!!
My son is interested to join JSA - Badminton, Can you give me the contact? Thank you in advance! -

I have spoken to Dr Lee, he mentioned that usually the kid has to be recommended by the school team. However, he also mentioned that you can do self-recommendation. JSA only take in kids with age 10 and above.
Hope the info help.

Hi everyparent
May I know what is the purpose of getting in Junior Sports Academies? What do they do? Does it helps to get into DSA? Thanks. I am quite interested too as my boy plays golf. -
i have 2 kids whom are training under the JSA and YSA scheme
. JSA - Junior Sports Academy ( Pr5 - P6 )
YSA - Youth Sports Academy ( sec 1 onwards )
both JSA and YSA were formerly known as " Combined Schools " Team , hence , some players still wore the old T-shirt that reads Singapore Schools …
Except that , currently the JSA provided i think 3-4 venues for trainees to train .(In my child’s case - their sport is table tennis )
For a start , they have to be a School Player , the coaches or school will be encouraged to make recomendation by submitting the names .
A trial selection would be conducted and players who have been selected have to go to any of the appointed centres for training .
The aim of JSA is to give a chance to identified talents coming from schools which, do not have strong pool of players, or a conducive training condition to come together to train with the other talented players and receive proper guidance by the much qualified coaches engaged by the MOE .They train 3 times , 7pm to 9 pm / week .
The best of the cohort will be selected under STTA 's Youth Development Squad (YDS) - which offers a minimum of 5 days training , attendents are compulsory . YDS is the feeder to NYT ( National Youth Team ) that may lead to the National Team . My Child was one of the fortunate one.
YDS has a set of training schedules that differs from JSA .
STTA send their YDS players to Taiwan , Korea or China .
While JSA also go for overseas training and competitions mainly in China .
YSA took their Teams to Stockholm , Sweden , both last year and this Oct 2011 .
So you can see it leads to a whole range of programmes …
By far , MOE , STTA had made a lot of effort in grooming our young players in the field of Table Tennis .
Heard it is equally interesting for Badminton , soccer , swimming too
As a Parent , i am happy for the children and thanks to MOE for their efforts.
My child have just received a certificate yesterday , when JSA held its 3rd graduation ceremony for the P6 JSA students at Hwa Chong Institution Hall .
