Primary One School Orientation

My son went for his orientation last Sat - children were put in their classes (my guess is to make new friends) and parents went for talks/ form-filling etc.
After the 2 hr bonding time he had with his frens.... the first thing he happily told me when he's out is \"Mummy - my frens all speak English, no Chinese!!\"
Haha - My boy's chinese is soooo poor (and i kept drilling about how his frens would all speak CL and he wont understand them - CL at 1st language school so thats why i was expecting more CL) that he was SOOO happy that his fellow 'comrades' all spoke same lingo as him!!

Don't worry about CL being first language. He will be forced to speak CL during curriculum time. My son had to speak CL a lot more (SAP school) as his teachers are strict. Anyway, with most kids coming from English speaking homes, the CL teachers will have to use English when there is a need, otherwise the kids just won't understand what they are talking about. :celebrate: -

Yes i have a colleague with a dd in Geylang Methodist and she went through the test before. I was quite surprised too. I dont think sap schools do that even.looney:

I was also shock to know initally i thought only sap school doing that.
Want to ask if my son dont score well for the test then what will happen to him
But anyway tomorrow he needs to sit for the test while i think i will listen to some kind of speech while he is doing his test ...Just got to wish my son good luck for his test..

Most schools have P1 orientation for the kids. That is when the parents will attend briefing and kids get to go to their respective classes and meet teachers and frens. There wil be school tour for both parents and kids. At that time, you get to buy the school uniform and books and sometimes even have enrichment classes (organised by school) registration as well.
My gal enjoyed her orientation thoroughly. The school provided a orientation package with color pencils, activity workbook, as well as water and snack. They are brief about the school rules and conduct too.
I think it is good for kids to be at a more organised orientation, esp. after they have confirmed getting into the school. When there is uncertainty (about balloting), better not subject the kid to that. -

That's where you must know what to do and do it fast. Split up with spouse to do task. Books can buy later or one of you can go get books when another attend briefing. With book list, can get from Popular too.
Need to complete some forms too, so get ready info like cert / I/C no., bank a/c no. for GIRO for sch fee. Uniform quickly Q first to measure for DD/DS and get about half or a size bigger. School shoes and socks can measure size based on Bata shoe size or even get from outside if no difference.
I remembered for DD case, after the briefing, DH and I split up for task and we managed to finish all and got out within half hour. That's when uniform q and bookshop q start to form (parents started coming with kids after filling form). Once you are \"jammed\" in q, can be ages as the number of people is just overwhelming. -

my boy's book list was given out before orientation (together with the orientation notification letter). can bring the list to popular to buy i guess. for us, that day, the school bookshop opened 15min before opening hrs and we chop and bought the books before the briefing started.
actually, if really kiasu and have time, you can call up the sch bookshop to see if you can buy before the orientation date. the bookshop vendor in my boy's school is quite obliging cos the vendor's children also schooling there. they also have those order first (drop you booklist/form in a 'box') then collect another day system.
don't worry la. enjoy this whole process.

I thought it will be chaotic during P1 orientation...however it wasn't at all !!! On the day of orientation last year, there wasn't any vendor selling uniforms/books.
Parents attended the briefing/introduction by principal/HODs while daughter was in class with her form teacher and classmates. Hubby signed forms for GIRO school/misc fees, option to take school transport etc etc. Booklist was given but there were dates to buy the books/uniforms. Parents just had to go online, make payment and then pick up the books on certain dates.
I brought daughter to buy her uniforms and collect her books. Books packed nicely in box. Very organized :salute:
