My son just come back from NMOS. He was very unhappy because this year is very difficult. He said this year's is 50% more difficult than last year's. He did 9 questions (each 1 mark), 8 questions ( each 2 marks), and 5 questions (each3 marks). I am afraid he can not get into the 2nd round.

How many marks are needed to get into the 2nd round?

There is no cut off marks for second round. It is based on cohort. Last year is about top 400 students, if i did not remember wrongly. Going to the second round guarantee a gold or silver.

I think your son's performance is commendable, trust me, he will surely get into 2nd round. Yes, the paper just gets harder and harder every year. Last year's round 2 paper was much harder than previous years. Did your son try that paper and how many could he do?

My son said his classmates even could not do 1 question correct. But he said the questions which he did, he could make sure 95% were correct. This result is not his expect ones so he is sad. My son can not take pressure, I think he is too nervous, so this result is below his normal standard.

Dun quite know how it works too πŸ˜‰ Tho he seems rather confident on the questions he attempted, but alas, say only lah πŸ˜‰ will wait for result then know.

As for his classmates, one attempted all 30 questions, but think some are guesswork. Another only attempted 19 questions.....so think also find the paper difficult.

                    Hi CWC,

My son did 19 qns last year, didn’t know how many correct, but got bronze only.
Does yr son get any training at outside Maths Olympiad training Ctr?

Last year, we were totally unprepared and unaware - school only informed us and gave us the consent form 2 days before the competition date. DS went in a daze and cannot remember how many qns he did, only said \"whoa mommy, very difficult, I left many blank :scared: \" In the end, he only managed a honorable mention award (1 below bronze), which was good enough for us considering we were sooooo unaware plus he was totally on his own, no tuition.

After the contest, I decided to start him with Maths Hub......so it's like 10 months now.....this year, shall see if Maths Hub is helping him. What about your son?

                        Hi CWC,

Maths hub is a good choice. My son has finished NMOS, SMOPS,SMO Junior1 training program at Maths hub. He is starting SMO Junior2 now. So you see, he learned a lot advance and got such result. He works very hard on it, he did 60 to 70 Maths Olympiad questions at least everyday. That’s why he feels sad now. May I know your son is studying at which branch of Maths hub.
