Opinions of the Primary School Registration System

P2A1 and P2A2 has never need to be ballot. I could not see the reason why there is a need to seperate them? Any idea?

CHS came extremely close last year, with only 18 places left after 2A2.
So who's to say there won't be a need to ballot for 2A2 in the future?

hence CHS increased this year's registration by one class. no ?

I remembered reading the top PSLE student 2010 attend Learning Lab.

and many others among the top NOT attending Learning Lab.....and the kid of a principal of a popular school attended Learning Lab but still did not score near the top

Current Phase 2A system of awarding priority to ALL alumni is plain illogical. It does not occur for secondary school, pre-U or university, so I fail to see how it should apply to Primary school. So far, not a shred of logic put forth that a blanket priority admission for OFFSPRING of alumni is fair or in keeping with the principle of meritocracy.....the only excuse is \"Oh its too hard to select between active vs non-active alumni, so if you are not an alumni, TOUGH!\", when the answer should be, \"We are a meritocratic society, we should level the playing field where possible, and not stack the odds without reason and impede social mobility.\"

But meritocracy has no play in primary school registration. For meritocracy to come into play, kids would have to take admission test. I do not want to see that happen.

Can you imagine the craziness?

I feel to level the playing field, primary school education must ensure that all students acquire the knowledge base, skills and competencies to enable the students to build on to deal with sec education and beyond.

That's just an example lah. I was not tring to promote Learning Lab. If the other students were also interviewed, I wonder how many were tutored and how many not.

With parents sharing that in primary school, a child will not get good grades in PSLE if the child just depend on what is taught in school , I wonder does it matter which school a child goes to?

If so, then it doesn't say much about such tuition centres at all, even if all its 'graduates' score well, since there is already pre-selection bias. The value add from such a tuition centre is likely to be low since the kids are all predisposed to be amongst the top already anyway...

Yep, it does and should not. But what place is there then for offspring of alumni to gain priority? On what basis does that go on? Which other PUBLIC institution in Singapore grants preferential entry or employment to OFFSPRING of alumni?

Again, the core issue gets side-stepped. Pet answers? \"Too hard\", \"Difficult to Change\", \"Life is Unfair, so live with it\".

So far, not a single logical support for the policy of BLANKET (as opposed to selective, which I am not against) priority admission in Phase 2A. It is unfair, unprincipled and should be dismantled.

If you already have an older child in your school of choice, then your second child qualifies for Phase 1...sure in, no balloting required.

But I sure hope you are not registering this year, because Phase 1 ended yesterday.

Anyway my focus is not on the ablility of Learning Lab to generate top scorers but when kids do very well in PSLE, is it because of what the students have learnt in class or in tuition centre? If it's the latter then does it matter which school a child enters? :offtopic:

the reason I asked is becos the policy by the Govt to so call give Singaporean an advantage might not have work in the long run. especially so when this policy will not hurt those who already had 1 kid in the school of choice.
