Parents/Kids Behaviour in Supermarket/Hypermart

Kids strewn around on the floor with books around them. Grrr!!!


Which reminds me of an incident. This happened in an expensive restaurant. This kid who was behaving badly took it upon himself to lie on the ground and whine. All this amidst waiters moving around serving HOT SOUP & FOOD. The poor waiters had to tiptoe around the kid for fear of spilling soup on the boy. Did the parents care? No. They just carried on eating. The captain went up to the parents and told them it wasn’t safe for the boy to be lying on the floor. Did they care? No. The other diners passed comments and tsked tsked them loudly. Did they care? No.

How annoying. I blame the parents for bad behaviour. If my kid did that, I would sweep the kid up, load her into the car and drive straight home for some punishment. If you can't behave in public, don't go out in public.

were they thrown out of the restaurant? if no, i am surprised cos' in hong kong and london, the whole table will definitely be thrown out. but on the other hand, most expensive restaurants ban kids from dining there.

No they weren't which what upset me even more. The captain just politely went up to them and told them it wasn't safe for the kid.

I am ok with scenario 1. So long as the parents and kids, eat, drink, pay and clean up. Don't leave wrappers or tissue papers behind in the trolley.


For scenario 2, trying out the toy with adult supervision is ok. What bugs me is when parents let the children try and try and try without supervision or let the child ride that spanking new bicycle in the store after they have decided to buy it. As for book stores, if they allow browsing, then they should have designated areas maybe with selected books for browsing. Should not allow people to just take the books from the shelves and plonk themselves all along the aisle blocking everyone's way.

Tissue in trolley is really quite disgusting. I was quite upset last Sat coz every trolley seemed to have something yucky left inside!

You have raised a very valid point above.

But I do believe that some exceptions have to be made sometimes in the case of toddlers, who tend to be volatile when it comes to matters of the stomach. Putting aside the fact that I believe most parents do bring their kids out after feeding them .... what if they had to run errands before going grocery shopping and that took up a bit more time than anticipated? Yes, I agree that one option is to go up to the cashier and pay for the item. But what if there is a long queue at the cashier? What if one is under time constraint? Time is not being spent productively when one has to interrupt the grocery shopping and then queue up twice some more. I feel that it would tantamount to stealing if one leaves the premises w/o paying and that would be almost impossible because of alarms and cctvs.

Anyway, I believe what is really important here is that the child needs to be explained to and that he/she has to understand that this is an exception made just one time and not the norm.

For toddlers, I'm sure most mothers would have prepared certain snacks and drinks for them in case of emergency. Toddlers are very fussy eaters and mothers would not risk getting anything off the shelves just like that. It's either the food doesn't agree with the toddler or the toddler doesn't agree to the food. Anyway, if the children are really that hungry, they need a full meal and not something to fill their stomach temporary. Otherwise, there's no harm for the children to wait till payment is made to have their snack. Honestly, it doesn't take more than an hour to do grocery shopping, does it?
