My question is how MANY are in this situation? Are they the majority or the minority. All the defense of 'no-days-off' is predicated on a small number of families that perhaps have special circumstances. Should the law not reflect the majority and then deal with the exceptions on a case by case basis? Instead, we have a catch-all, and many employers, those not as enlightened as yourself, will abuse it to confine their maids for whatever reason, be it laziness, unfounded fear or just plain bloody-mindedness. Is it not worth to have legislation in place to make sure that this does not happen, and then make the exemptions where warranted?
My point is... how to compare apple and orange?? Is it a fair comparison? All these are terms agreed upon before we even agree to have the agents bring them in. If you want off days, then don't agree to an employer's request for no off days.
There is no 1 policy that fits all in this maid-employer situation.. that's why I am also against implementing any law, and to leave it to be decided between maid and employer... -
Aiyah 3Boys, to be fair to employers like me and some others here who want to give their maids off days but maids don't want cos they prefer to have monetary compensation for off days, then how ah? Can force them to take off day? Then it will create another set of unhappiness between employer and maid. *sigh* :slapshead:

The policy can be finessed and nuanced. But the starting point has to be that the maid has the legal right for a day off a week, and then we work from there for circumstances like yours, bearing in mind that there will be employers who will seek to exploit that loophole.
The point is exceptional cases like yours should not serve as a smokescreen for abusive or unreasonable employers who resist reform. -

ok Halimah...I mean 3boys, so you are pushing for all employers to give mandatory 4 days off a month. So shall their maids' pay be cut down by $20x4 i.e. $80pm? Right now maids entitled to $20 per month in lieu of no off day (current recommendation is 1 off day pm).Angelight:

out of the few hundred thousand maids in singapore, how many are abused and work round the clock ?

i think the agencies are the one who has the upper hand since day 1. unless you can find your own maid and bring her in here, employers are at the mercy of these agencies.
i am all for day off for maids but think it is best to let the employer and maid sort out these details themselves cos' every family has different needs. some might give the day off spread over a few hours per day each week instead of one whole day each week. -

Really the agencies are encouraging the maids to job hop because they stand to gain much more by getting more placement fees and the maids get to increase pay as trained maids.verykiasu2010:

Seen with my own eyes at the agencies recently. Maids were on off day and went to the agencies in group, giggling, all want to have higher pay by asking for transfer and agencies helping them to cook up excuses like work long hours etc etc
The whole industry is rotten!
Employers of new maids are suckers by default, in order to avoid the scheming \"experienced\" maids. Higher pay for experienced maids is NEVER an issue.
