Should maids be given a day off every week?

out of the few hundred thousand maids in singapore, how many are abused and work round the clock ?
have some sense of proportion first
i think the agencies are the one who has the upper hand since day 1. unless you can find your own maid and bring her in here, employers are at the mercy of these agencies.
i am all for day off for maids but think it is best to let the employer and maid sort out these details themselves cos' every family has different needs. some might give the day off spread over a few hours per day each week instead of one whole day each week.
Seen with my own eyes at the agencies recently. Maids were on off day and went to the agencies in group, giggling, all want to have higher pay by asking for transfer and agencies helping them to cook up excuses like work long hours etc etc
The whole industry is rotten!
Employers of new maids are suckers by default, in order to avoid the scheming \"experienced\" maids. Higher pay for experienced maids is NEVER an issue. -

Thats why we should never Sent the maid back to the agent for counselling.

My question is how MANY are in this situation? Are they the majority or the minority. All the defense of 'no-days-off' is predicated on a small number of families that perhaps have special circumstances. Should the law not reflect the majority and then deal with the exceptions on a case by case basis? Instead, we have a catch-all, and many employers, those not as enlightened as yourself, will abuse it to confine their maids for whatever reason, be it laziness, unfounded fear or just plain bloody-mindedness. Is it not worth to have legislation in place to make sure that this does not happen, and then make the exemptions where warranted?
How MANY? It is more than you think im sure! Look at the service industry alone... how many people are working on wkends?? Check out showflats, expo fairs, hotels, retail industry, leisure industry, food industry... and many many more people who travel for work... single parents etc.
Make these employers the exception? Why must it be them who are the exception and NOT others like you, the able employer who can afford off days, the exception?
I am not for such policy making, always thinking of the PERFECT scenario, when life is not so rosy and picture perfect for many other households. These are households that already have issues on the \"normal wkends\" for regular people, so why make it a further stress for them and have them be EXEMPTED from the so called law and policy that you recommend? And how to implement exception? Make them go to Meet the People session and ask MP to write letter to MOM... and then MOM have the discretion to decide to approve or not?? Com'on... the perfect household that can afford off days have it easy... pls make life easier for these families who are under your so-called exception... -

My current maid of 1 month... tell her to do things or tell her she do wrongly give black face... 2nd day at work, cos she cant understand english, ask to go back to agency... I called the agent, left it on speaker... and u know what the agent kept telling the maid? \"Diam diam\" with lotsa bahasa indo that i cldnt understand.. next moment, maid was telling her \"thank you mam\"!
I knew then that something is not right, took over the phone and confronted my agent! She was shocked! Cos' she had no idea that it was on speaker phone... n she gave excuse saying that she told maid to diam diam as in not to keep asking to go back to agency... but i know very well that she is telling her to wait till her work permit is issued before going back to agency, so that the agent can find her a new employer!!
Am on the lookout for a new maid w/o going thru this unscrupulous agency!! -

Yes, my ex-maid lied she wanted a change of employer because my house was too huge for her. She lied that I was living in a huge bungalow and she had to take care of 5 huge dogs!!! Can you believe that?!YES ! very BLATANT!
