WTA : Cello vs Violin

DD just started learning violin this year - as CCA in school. But lately, the instruction/teacher has approached her a few times to do Cello instead...as they needed to train students up for the SYF next year. The teacher has yet to ask to speak to me, not sure if they will.


With no music background, I have no idea how is Cello different from Violin. The only issue I have is.....DD can practise violin at home and continue after her primary school if she is still interested. But Cello? Not something people play solo or at home right??

Any comments/advice is appreciated

Well, repertoire wise, violin does have more quantity compared to cello. But as someone who has accompanied string instruments extensively last time, I believe they both have equally have beautiful sound and equally competent as solo instrument. Just listen to this

I don't think your child will have any regret specialising in cello.

thanks for the advice. Yah, Cello definitely seem sexier & the sounds seems more mellow, probably less 'painful'

I didn't know Cello can sound rather nice alone.....shall show DH some youtube & hopefully he will change his mind & be supportive if DD really keen to switch.
But I guess, we will just let her practise in school ..... until the day, she shows strong enough interest to purchase a personal Cello or take further lessons.....

My dd is learning cello. Of course can play cello at home if you can endure the 'slaughtering' sound


I think cello sounds much much nicer with piano accompaniment. If play solo, I feel very sleepy after 5 minutes :rotflmao:

Brought my kids to watch Pluck (String Trio comprising of violin, viola & cello) earlier this month. It's a Very entertaining string trio that performs classical music. You ought to go watch it with your kids the next time they come by.

I was amazed that the cellist (a lady) can dance around the stage with her cello!! See what amazing things people can do, once they are good (to a certain level) at something.

Can I know which music school in Singapore conducts Cello lessons for children? My DD is now learning piano but he wants to learn the cello instead.
