Happy Mama:
You have said it all.....Of all places in NZ, I love Queenstown best. But North Island isn't too bad either. Make a trip to Lake Taupo and Huka Falls. It's lovely and picturesque. I love their fresh water beach at Taupo too. You can try Bungy jumping there if you're game enough.
Rotorua is nice too. Sheep shearing, Maori Village, Geysers, funballs etc. You can also catch a day trip or overnight trip to Bay Island. It's awesome and you can catch the dolphins.
If you are staying for a long period, you may want to go to Wellington for the museums. You can either take a shuttle flight or drive there, but do make more stops for rest as the drive there takes 9 hours.
In Auckland city itself, do visit the Sky Tower and if you're game enough too, try the Sky Tower jump. For the less adventurous, then do the walk.
Enjoy your trip!
also read in a travel megazine, some places in the far north of north island hasnice resort too -
Happy Mama's listed most of the fun places.

Forgot to respond with regards to the quakes. Auckland and Rotorua should be safe from the quakes, but you may experience quakes in Wellington. To those staying there, it’s very normal to experience slight shakes now and then.
-
Yes there're lovely resorts there, both Ski Resorts and Beach Resorts. Try skiing at Mount Ruapehu in the North Island. It's really fun.

Thanks Happy Mama for the sharing! I may give South Island a skip now becos of the quakes. Is 6-7 days enough for North Island if we are just going to Auckland, Rotorua and Lake Taupo, Huka Falls and maybe Bay Island?
-
Am bringing DD with us, are there any kids-friendly places to see at North Island?

Angelight, in my opinion, it will be quite rush. Assuming you catch the night flight to Auckland, you’ll reach there around noon (NZ time) the next day as NZ is 4-5 hours ahead of us. There’s nothing much you can do on that day except collecting car from airport and then resting and getting over jet lag.
The next day (which is already day 3) you can drive to Taupo and stay over for 1 night. Can relax at the beach where your kids can enjoy themselves there. There’re lovely parks too.
Day 4, head to Rotorua. Visit the Agrodome, for sheep shearing and milk feeding. Can visit Maori village and also the Wildlife Park all in Rotorua. There’s also the fun ball and carts area nearby (you need to google). I drove past but didn’t stop over for that… You may also want to visit the geysers and hot spring. In Rotorua, it depends if you want to stay 1 or 2 nights. Then next day, drive back to Auckland and move on to Bay Islands.
Bay Islands will already be Day 5 or 6 depending on hown many nights you stay. You may want to do a day tour but if I were you, I would stay overnight as the beaches are lovely and your kids can catch the dolphins or do snorkeling etc. The resorts there are lovely too.
Bedside all these, you will want to visit Sky Tower in Auckland, do some shopping in Auckland. If you want to go skiing then you’ll need another day or two…
So in my opinion, minimum 8 days for a less hectic trip especially with kids and the flight to Auckland’s almost 11 hours (10.5) direct flight. Ideal 10 days but again, it really depends on you… -

Huh? I thought I mentioned Taupo and Huka Falls in my earlier post? :scratchhead: vk2010, you need specs already.
Oh, is there a honey farm? I didn't know that. Manuka honey's really cheap in NZ... Where is it near?
-
Manuka Honey and golden kiwis.
We lugged back a carton of each. And the golden kiwis are the size of your hand. These they do not export, they usually keep the good ones for their domestic markets.
The south islands are beautiful. We went glacier climbing, took a helicoptor up to Mount Cook, went bungee jumping and sky diving. North Islands, well the only one that we remember is Rotorua. To us the whole of Rotorua smelled like rotten eggs  haha. But their hot springs are wonderful.
