next time before PVs start doing the work, school must get them to sign Letter of Indemnity and to write 10000 lines of the meaning of volunteer....

PVs do sign the letter confirming they understand there is no guarantee of a place. They go in with 4 eyes open (husband and wife).

A safer bet would be to move within 1 km of the target school which is in a low population density area, ideally all bungalows ....

better still shift all the popular schools to outshore islands but not Sentosa (there have GCBs)....then fair and square for everybody lor....[/quote]Dun nid so drastic ba. Then must take ferry to schools? Storm during PSLE how?? rocky boats, all memorised facts will \"fly\" out liao.

It's just primary school, the journey is still long. If at this stage already cannot take it, then how to support the kids on this long and headache journey? Just relax lah.

Sad to read about these parents, because I once was in that position. One chooses a school, sometimes years ahead with the belief that the kid will get into the school (no matter how aware they are that it is not guaranteed). The PVs work with the teachers, meet the children and get to know the school better … it’s difficult to accept that fact. I took 2 months to accept that myself.

For schools, knowing how it has been like the past few years should restrict # of PVs accepted. In that way, parents can only blame school for not accepting them as PV and not finding time wasted.

The problem is with the increasing flood of applicants at Phase 2A (children of alumni). There is a hereditary aristocracy at play, where by dint of some imaginary massive contributions, ALL children of alumni of a particular school get in ahead and are all but guaranteed a place, even if their parents did nothing but shake legs.

Of course, once you challenge this status quo, woe betide you! All the scaremongering about 6-y.o. taking qualifying exams and other red herrings start emerging. Can’t even broach the subject without getting a bashing, much too touchy!

Phase 2A(2) shld limit itself to \"For a child whose sibling has studied in the school of choice\".

Then create another phase for \"For a child whose parent has studied in the school of choice\" with a quota.

                Hi Parents,

My hubby & I who have done PV (in 2006) to improve the chances of registering our son in a school within 1km.

Since I have that ‘experience’, I feel a need to voice out my feelings about this whole PV thing. To some parents, it would look as though I’m ungrateful but do hear me out.

Firstly, I had to submit an ‘essay’ why I should be ‘accepted’ as PV, our ‘job experience’ and how we can contribute as PV.

After we were successfully shortlisted, there was this ‘interview’ with the principal and admin clerk to fill in another form.

My hubby did most of the ‘PV’…his responsibility was to gather all the kids every Saturday morn for their respective enrichment lessons and then inform the teacher to bring them to classrooms. This ‘job’ was from 8am to 1pm.

We had to call the school from time to time to ask if there were ‘available slots’ to chalk up hours. There was once the school asked for volunteers to wash sweet potatoes for Civil Defence Day. 2 other mums and myself washed cartons of sweet potatoes for 5 hours.

Then there was also this other request to help out at the before/after school care in school premises. It was for 1 week BUT I wasn’t allowed to accumulate hours. My hubby and I agreed that I should go ahead.
After my hubby completed 40 hours, the school requested his ‘services’ for another few more Saturdays which he agreed.

Parent volunteers have to perform many other tasks because of P1 registration. This is not voluntary in the true sense…because there is a motive. PVs should serve with a true heart without any motive of chalking up hours and desperately calling every other day to ask for ‘jobs’ or email.

This PV for P1 registration should be abolished. If parents genuinely wish to be a parent volunteer, they should offer their services WHEN their children are already studying in the school.

                        Strictly based on religion.
