Opinions of the Primary School Registration System

3Boys:
The problem is with the increasing flood of applicants at Phase 2A (children of alumni). There is a hereditary aristocracy at play, where by dint of some imaginary massive contributions, ALL children of alumni of a particular school get in ahead and are all but guaranteed a place, even if their parents did nothing but shake legs.
Of course, once you challenge this status quo, woe betide you! All the scaremongering about 6-y.o. taking qualifying exams and other red herrings start emerging. Can't even broach the subject without getting a bashing, much too touchy!
I did not bash you right? Just friendly discussion in another thread. Just check check to determine what you define as bash. I stop going into certain threads
, so no longer following discussion in those threads.

Who dare bash 3Boys aniwaes? He's the man..
Hence the man says what he thinks and knows.
A friend's son took the qualifying exam.. just to
qualify oni leh into one top school..
and
not because of anything other than cos they are
residing withing 1km of the school.
The discussion of qualifying exams will open up
cans of worms wor... and then drag into why
kids these days are so advanced in Primary 1
having attended all those enrichment classes
every weekend? :siam: Then the parents
complain their children are bored during lessons..
Parents even considering volunteering must not
go into it thinking there WILL be something in
return at the end of it.
They obliged to offer their services at their own free will. -
An alumni status deprive a child staying next to the sch a chance, and in turn, this child has to go to a further sch using his alumni status. Haha...what a joke right? :siam:

I just hope we don't \"progress\" in that direction of entrance exams for P1.
Enrichments or no, it's still the parents' choice.
They must understand how to engage their kids later on, when their kids are exposed to information more advanced than their age.
But if there's entrance exams at P1, it's no longer a choice to have enrichments or not. I can foresee the emergence of \"hot\" kindy too. I think right now, there are \"hot\" kindy already.
I want to migrate to Finland

But houses at bukit timah is already very high now right? Does it matter any more??
Yes, I know some people main priority is sch, but I rather think that more people buy flats for other reasons than sch. People only think of sch when they have children or they are thinking of having children. If u r young couple who is looking to buy flat, are u looking to buy near a famous sch or near your parents, town where u work?
If u have time, you can PV, you u dun, you fork out money to buy expensive house near famous sch. Got difference meh? Some people really cannot afford time. -
So next time the question to ask is not how many members in your family but which is your primary school :rotflmao:

My view is that there should be as little impediment as possible to entry of students to their school of choice. The only things I would give concession to would be logistical considerations, and, to a small degree, priority for those who add to the โethosโ or โcultureโ of the school. Whatever the case, it cannot be that 60%+ of places in popular schools are locked away by end of Phase 2A. And its not as if ALL of the parents of students who enrolled in 2A are big contributors to the school, mostly are hangers-on. So far, no one has argued that this is not an inequitable situation.
So, what are the obstacles in the way of making this happen? "Too difficult lah", "Canโt please everyone", "Back to square one".
Seriously? For a forum of go-getting parents who seem to have a solution for every problem, there is none to be had here? Or is it simply a lack of motivation to do so (or motivation to maintain status quo)?
So I say, Phase 1 for siblings, Phase 2 (not more than 30% of enrolment) for โspecialโ priority groups, be they alumni, church, clan, GRL, whatever, to be defined, and Phase 3 by distance, but cast the net wide, 4-5km (Iโve checked), and you will dilute out whatever price concentrations for property you may be concerned about, for there will be a few schools with overlapping catchment areas. Ballot for Phase 2 and 3 should applicants exceed places. Phase 2 needs to be finessed, but overall this is clean, and levels the playing field considerably.
The issue is that Phase 2A completely is out of control, and Phase 2B (PV/GRL/Clan) is chaotic and uneven. Phase 2 in my proposal will be a little like that too, but at least it is capped and the damage will be limited if abused. Can you imagine a situation whereby eventually for a popular school, it is effectively "No outsiders may apply"? What kind of Singapore education system would that be then? We are getting there. -

No, no system can please everyone. But wherever possible, the system in place must be fair to the majority and transparent.mummyo:
Exactly my point! No one system can please everyone!
People who are complaining are the ones caught out by the system.
I rest my case.
