1st birthday

my girl’s 1st bday tomorrow and i know there is this tradition to put few items there for her to choose… eg abacus, drumsticks etc… anyone can tell me what are the items and what they represent ?

If I recall (so many years liao), my traditional parents put these for my dd’s first bday: a red egg, pen, ruler, abacus, book, scissors (children one), angkukueh…i think got some more but don’t remember now. Bday girl must crawl (must be a distance) towards these items and pick 3 items that are laid on the floor. The moment she takes any item, remove from her and she continues for the other items. Supposed to signify what she will "be" when she grows up… abacus (Mathematician), book (writer/teacher), scissors (tailor), pen (writer…) I thought it was nonsensical but agreed for the fun of it. We put the "egg" far far behind…becoz it means "carry egg" for school marks (zero la!)…
