how to earn the parent’s trust?

if a well-behaved and academically above average student is subjected to the parent’s restriction on phone usage and curfews, does it mean that the parents do not trust her? or is it because the parents are not ready to let go as they are always fearing the worse that may happen (ie things that are beyond control like parang attacks at night if late curfew etc)?
it is quite difficult to tell a student to try to understand the parents when it seems that their parents do not understand them. i understood my parents only when i become a parent myself. by then, i am glad that i had not rebel against their good-intentioned, but wrongly executed childrearing methods.
