kabalevsky, yes, confirm in...haha...orientation will be on 12 Nov @ 9am. Then they will let us know whether they will set up BASC or not.
I went to the YMCA BASC @ Blk 666A, i think we will more or less settle the kid there if CPS wont start their own BASC. Like the bright and clean environment. Kids can take nap (a super plus point for us!) and not so stress with additional assessment books (this is terrible for some BASC which claim to be academic focus), i just want my kid have a good rest and fun time after school.
i hope CPS can set up a good BASC though, cos we've heard quite a few express that they need this service and having it in sch is much more convenient esp since CPS location is a bit way in...

The whole CCA group is performing - about 30 of them from P2 to P5 or P6 - not too sure...And they will be performing on Monday in school for the National Day Celebration

kabalevsky: I'm so glad that schl are having silence reading, how i wish my GG learn to read SILENTLY..I always suspect that there'an itchy worms staying in her buttock, she nvr sit properly while doing reading.

My ds1 didn't have any test. They had an introduction to the teacher and classmates and a tour around the school on Orientation day. Then they did some activities in class with the teacher, no test.
I don't think it is a \"popular school\" practice though. It is just dependent on how the school wants to allocate classes. For schools that have P1 and 2 classes remain with the same classmates (follow-up system) so that the kids make longer lasting friendships and get more comfortable with each other, they don't have those tests and allocation is random.
For schools that practice some kind of banding or grouping based on performance, they will have diagnostic tests on Orientation day to sort or stream the kids.
I have friends whose kids are in neighbourhood schools who have the tests and also have friends whose kids are in popular schools that don't have the tests, that's how I conclude it's just the preference of the school or P.
As for differentiated learning, (in case you are worried that if your kid is very advanced, then random classes may not allow him to go at a faster pace compared to streamed classes), within the classes, they do try and group the kids according to ability.
There are 2 forms of groupings (oh dear, hope you find this useful instead of boring... cos I was also NIE trained, and learnt all these in NIE, just to share). We can group the kids based on ability for Math during math class. All the advanced ones can do more advanced sums based on the same topics when they are in group work. They work with similar ability classmates.
Then, on other occasions, when the teacher sees the need, they will fall in with the other groupings whereby there are 4 or 5 in a group and they are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The teacher will know which numbers are the strong ones. Which are weaker. The kids work together in their groups on problem solving and sums.
The stronger ones get to peer teach. They guide the weaker ones along. They learn better when they teach others, that's how they gain. The weaker ones learn from their peers how to do it. Some kids learn better when their peers teach them using their own language than if the teacher teaches them. So they also gain.
Sometimes the teachers call kids to answer Qs on the board by calling the numbers.
Ok, i am sure I haven't fully explained these grouping systems cos I learnt these over a long period of time and I am just briefly explaining them here. But I hope it helps explain that even in random classes, the kids can learn at their pace too, and there are benefits at lower primary levels with such arrangements.
At higher levels, streaming may be more beneficial, which is why most primary schools start grouping their students into streamed classes from Pr 3 onwards, including CPS.

it's ok, she's still young. they all learn when they look at each other in school. they slowly learn to read silently.
my son will talk to his friends during silent reading too, but they are scared of their tr. so if tr scolds, they all surely read silently.

kabalevsky, thanks for the detailed information. I like the idea of group learning which let the kids teach each other. If the kid can make his/her friend understand correctly, he/she himself/herself sure can benefit from that.
But personally i donβt like the idea for streaming at this young age, even at higher level, it creates unnecessary pressure to the young kids and parents, also not good for building the self-confidence for the kids. I was so upset to hear my colleague to call her childβs teacher to fight for the one mark because it might be "so important" for the kidβs future.
But we have no choice, this is the system set up by MOE. Really hope they can look into this and revamp with some open-minded ideas. -
For my DD1 who is P3 this year, streaming started end of last year, P2.
But somehow the top 80s, marks are so close and so this year the top 2 classes in the P3 are a mixture of the top 80s from P2 last year!
But it matters not which class the child is in - important is that she learns to the best of her capability and the teachers are dedicated to guide

Yup, we are in the system... Unless we move to other countries, I think we just have to make do what we can. Be happy as best as we can be in this system and see how to make it work for us.
On our part we try and let our kids be more all-rounded and not let them view each mark so seriously. If they are careless, that's different, we guide them, show them how to be careful. There are many other values and virtues we can inculcate in them, which will make them more balanced and then we'd trump the system instead of being controlled by it. yah?
In the JW school thread, someone commented that having a strong parent support group and good community of parents guiding the kids, the pr sch will benefit a lot. The image and quality of students in the school will improve. I agreed with what that person said.
So let us band together, as parents, we can do a lot... Here's to our children's bright and happy future!
