yes, rental and food cost have gone up but it seems to be that price increase is the right of the hawkers and theirs only. the comments from people are usually \"no choice, what to do, just pay lah\" etc. hawkers knowing this are able to up the price to any amount they like.tankee:
IMHO, more contributing factor to raising hawker food prices are RENTAL !
those long-timer stalls in older hawker centers are able to maintain low prices, eg $2-$3 for plate of fried carrot cake, as they pay vey low rental for their stall. And these hawker typically only need to work half a day to earn their keep.
But the newer hawkers are working for their rental. They have to charge more, and stay open for longer hours.
food portion reduce and honestly now most of the food sucks too and if you ask too many questions or a bit more, might get :nunchuk: too.
and you are right that those at old food centres are still holding their price well, still same portion and delicious (but they are getting a bit too old and soon no more nice food :scared: ).
and we would not be able to find the old price as well as the old taste of the food anymore.
absolutely agree that some of foods (esp those in the newer hawker centres/foodcourts) really sucks.....
wonder do they really know how to cook

Ohhhh... you compare big city... I stay in small town. Big spaces. Carparks all free. Cars very cheap and I dun even remember seeing trains at all. No subway either.
Food was cheap (huge steaks, fat salads, creamy milk) and I almost went to clothes heaven when I saw t-shirts at $2 at WalMart. We lived on one salary and saved more than in Singapore. -

Many items (exclude property price) is much more expensive in Singapore than else where. A pair of Nike shoe is double or triple the price in US. I was told. Electronic gadgets are more ex in Singapore than HK, US and many other places. Food is getting expensive too......Rivevae:
