I started piano at about 6yrs old and enjoyed it immensely. However after a while, the pieces got more technical, and my dad didnt help by throwing in Chinese Classical songs (emphasize deng li jun!). Made me lose interest after a while.

You may want to take note of this and try to go along with what your kid enjoys. I stopped at grade 5 practical, pity.

i only hope i won't forget my intentions and get caught up in the paper chase too! πŸ˜“

It really is best to hone skills (as much as possible) before PSLE. By the time the kids go to Sec School, you'll find that they'd be so caught up with their busy Sec school life, they won't have all that much time to work on music. And if their interest is not all that strong and their CCA is unrelated, they will totally drop it out then complete their course in music studies.

I agree too! I heard many of my friends are doing that which made me think through that I didn't want it that way. I prefer my child to love to play the music instead of chasing for exams & certificates! πŸ™‚

Serendipity, good for you! Happy for your DD too. So many are just chasing after the certs that they forget to let the child enjoy. And also, what's the point if at the end of grade 8, the child is NOT playing at the standard of a real grade 8 but merely playing the 3 exam pieces well.

Serendipity, just in case you are interested, ABRSM offers 'Prep Test' for those who would like to have an experience, and Grade 1 seems overwhelming.

There is no pass or fail, no marks awarded, just positive comments written on the cert. πŸ™‚

My child is currently under a foreign music system. We have plans for her to take the ABRSM exam when we return to SG next year. However, the system here does not follow ABRSM. The following are her two recent pieces (before a 2-months break). Can somebody please advise me on the equivalent ABRSM level of these piano pieces? ABRSM Grade 2? Thanks.
