the act that was caught on TV

does not seem to be texting, perhaps it is as she claimed, recording the moment .... and nothing else

Texting, reading, recording, playingโ€ฆ is not the issue. Teachers had been telling me, when Ma Li Ke Tah is being played must stand straight straight and look ahead, also straight straight, or I will miss recess.

and no talking or gigling, anyone caught would have to sing the anthem alone to the entire school

              Chenonceau:
Poor girl (I mean the foreigner who commented)... Many new citizens compare Singapore with their country of origin and they cannot understand why we are so hard on our politicians. In some countries in South East Asia, a powerful politician can send a hitman out to shoot someone he doesn't like and NOTHING will happen to him and NO ONE will dare to complain about him. Compared to politicians like that, Penny is an angel.

I am not trying to condone what Penny did. After all, did not all of us grow up in school being taught to say the pledge and sing the anthem at full attention? BUT, there seems to be a massive over reaction here....
Thank you my dear. My sentiments exactly.

An MP was texting during National Anthem, and suddenly we have a witch hunt. I mean, she has apologised, so what else do we want from her? Quit her post? Take her kids out of school? We are approaching the voyeuristic extremes of the UK tabloids, and guess where that ended up?

better set an example to young school goers.

                  recommended remedial actions

                  a) write on the blackboard 50 times \" I must stand at attention for the complete duration of the National Anthem \"

                  b) attend the National Anthem for one week at the nearest primary school at 7.15am...........without her handphone.

The disRespect, whatever the reason, may be not a big issue by itself..

Bu the fact that the MP deleting comments on her FB and avoiding the issue shows lack of transparency and accountability for their actions. Only when heavily pressured after part of SG bombarded non-stop and possibly making it viral, that she finally give a half-hearted and highly questionable \"excuse\".. Is this what we expect of our leaders?

Kindly focus your discussion on the issue and not at each other.

                        I have embargoed a post.
