If I were at the National Day Parade, it would have been a different story. I would have stood at attention and proudly sung the anthem loud and clear. I would have resisted the urge to take my handphone out of my pocket to text or read SMSes.

And so succumbing to the urge to take out a handphone and text during the National Anthem is a major character flaw, and renders the person unfit for public office, holding company directorships ...... and running for elected Presidency perhaps?

She should just acknowledge and apologise sincerely and let the whole thing pass instead of deleting comments and later come up with some lame excuses..

I'm taking the mickey, you don't have to answer.....[/quote]I wouldn't say it's a major character flaw nor that it renders a person unfit for public office BUT it does show disrespect for the national anthem and all it stands for on National Day at the precise moment when the entire nation is celebrating the occasion. I suppose as an MP, she's held to higher standards than other mere mortals at the stands that day. If Mr Ah Beng had dug his nose while the national anthem was being played and had his image captured on air, he would have gotten the brunt of social media attention too.

Those who served NS or attended school would know that if you're at the scene (i.e. All those who ATTENDED the NDP), you are supposed to stay still when the anthem is being played. This is respect.

For whose who did not attend the NDP, there is no such practices/requirements. No one is ever going to talk about a minister who does not stay still in his house or on the road when the anthem is being played. C'mon, you don't expect pedestrians crossing the road to stop halfway in the middle of the road just bcoz the anthem is being played miles away right?

Please look at the issue in context.

She is AT the PARADE and the National Anthem is being played and She is supposed to sing and stand at attention. And she is a leader, a people's representative (Elected MP), a role model.. (who mis-behaved).

I feel most of the criticism against her is valid and justified.

Actually she wouldn't have drawn that much criticism if she had simply apologised & not try to divert attention away from her glaring mistake by lecturing netizens with \"NDP is a time to unite; not divide\" ... That last sentence was a little out of context... Afterall, who is dividing the country? People are just pinpointing about her inappropriate behaviour during national anthem; not dividing the country. It just made matters worse when she opened her mouth! Maybe it's time to consider attaching PR consultants to MPs (read: job creation! haha) to teach them proper decorum, including what to say & what not to say
