I think some angmo speaks better mandarin than them, really
-
alot of βblindβ votes will go to TT coz heβs most famous and also deemed most qualified as he had held the highest office among the 4.

MMM:
I was surprised when he said \"I am Tan Kim Lian\". Anyway, it must not have been easy to sit down there, one camera point to your face and it's a 10 min speech. So kudos to all the candidates.
Haha must go and listen. Only heard the EL. Hubby gave up when he heard TKL's EL speech. He said the way he speaks/ the voice just makes people tune out immediately. So he asked me to switch to the next Tan. But I heard some part of TKL's speech in mandarin. So who is the one who can't make it???
As for the chinese cmi one, a bit rude to say, just go watch. you can watch one less (since i mentioned TCB used voice over).
Actually was itching to see if there are malay and tamil versions, I won't know what' they are saying, it's just to see which candidate used his own voice. I must be :siao: -
hquek:
:rotflmao: :rotflmao: I thot TKL can speak Tamil, right ?
Actually was itching to see if there are malay and tamil versions, I won't know what' they are saying, it's just to see which candidate used his own voice. I must be :siao: -

insider:
insider,
My best friend is voting for TT. I am fine with that PROVIDED she goes and reads something to justify her precious vote otherwise it is a meaningless blind vote. If after reading and knowing more, she forms her basis of voting for TT, then it is totally acceptable coz it is an intelligent and informed decision and I will respect that.
Same for the case of my mum. She knows so little but will be putting in her vote coz she 'knows' TT.
Pls read with an open mind...
I know you have nuanced your position on this.
But there are a lot of sweeping statements.
To quote Voltaire (or attributed to him); \"I do not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.\" I am not inclined to vote for Dr TT, for reasons already stated, but there are a lot of derogatory statements about the mental state of people who will vote for TT. I think its an insult to the voters. -
verykiasu2010:
Even in the US presidential system, it is possible to win the popular vote and lose the Presidency. And that is an all-or-none situation. Its happened 4 times -->
It is possible that even if the PAP win 50.0000000001% of the votes, there will still be ZERO opposition in parliament, even if every candidate is from SMC and there is no GRC.mummyo:
How does 40% support translates to just 7% of opposition representation in Parliament?!! Is that right?
Every candidate needs to win by only one vote majority to be in parliament.
So don't be surprised if the oppo gets 49.99999999% of the popular votes but loses in every seat by one vote.
Unless the constitution is changed to make the parliament one of proportionate representation, in which case we will see quite a number of monkeys in parliament
Four candidates won the popular vote but lost the presidency: Andrew Jackson won the popular vote but lost the election to John Quincy Adams (1824); Samuel J. Tilden won the popular vote but lost the election to Rutherford B. Hayes (1876); Grover Cleveland won the popular vote but lost the election to Benjamin Harrison (1888); Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the election to George W. Bush (2000).

As for GRC, perhaps ask our minority races how they would feel if we did away with it? How much representation will they get in parliament? -
Strparent:
You got to give it to the guy for looking very serious and all during the performance and not nodding off, or checking handphone/ipad/whatever.
I mean seriously, attending the annual Star Awards ???? and the program was in mandarin, I did not know SRN was multi-lingual, but in any case, is that even relevant to the presidency ?Strparent:
Very true, and I'll use my precious vote in accordance to what my heart, my mind, my soul tells me!
Each vote is precious and important. To again quote http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/08/neo-swee-lin-its-my-vote-and-its-precious/
\"I will not vote according to who I think stands a chance or not. I will not vote in a politically savvy way. I will vote with my heart, my mind, my soul. It is my vote, and it is precious.\" -
3Boys:
Hi 3Boys,Actually, all this TT bashing really reminds me why I am anathema to opposition political tactics and makes me want to change my vote back for TT.
Please don't assume a monopoly of wisdom and think that ALL who vote for Dr TT are somehow blind or lacking in grey matter.
That kind of arrogance is galling, no better than the incumbent party.
of course, it is your right to decide who you want to vote for.
And pls do not misunderstand, I personally do not think all TT supporters are 'somehow blind or lacking in grey matter'. My mistake if it implies otherwise.
My opinion that MANY are as what I stated below, but NOT restricted to those groups. There are much more than those which I felt that way - and IT IS A FACT that is the case for some aunties and uncles ( including my mum ), imho.Strparent:
As I said, this is a rare opportunity to vote having 4 choices. I only wish that as many as possible will do a proper analysis and think a bit more , rather than just the default choice.
As I said the impression of TT by all the lao uncles and aunties who read newsaper and watch TV are of one that has contributed immensedly to our nation, one that is dignified, one that speaks very well, one who is genuinely coming out to serve the people. Add to that list, all the people in comfort zone who dont bother or do not want to cause any ripple, or kiasu or kiasi - the onus is TT has the highest chance to win by default.raysusan:
spoke to some aunties i knew about this pE
they said they will vote for TT cause they only know him and the news speaks good about him
we now have 4 candidates, we should owe it to ourselves to evaluate the pros and the cons, the moral thing to do, the right thing to do, the right or IDEAL candidate for the job. We just dont want another shoo-in situation.
Basically, we just want a fair competition and all to carefully evaluate the 4 candidates. Each vote is precious and important.
I simply do not want another yes-man and we missed out the opportunity to vote in a real check and balance speak-out-when-necessary President.
all above are my personal views and opinions only.
No arrogance intended, just HOPE. may we get a just and committed President come 27 Aug.
