In the dictionary, the tone for “一” is always yī, regardless of the word that comes after it. It is only when we speak, then we change the tone accordingly.

However, I am not sure how teachers will mark it in tests and exam. In my kids' school, hanyu pinyin is only tested in the first half of P1, not tested any more after that.

They sell hypy posters in popular. Those good for pasting on the wall. It has sheng mu and yun mu. My kids' school uses that I bought that for home and found it useful. Personally, I found it easy as there are pictures on the poster for each sound, so it helps me to remember the sound as well if I am unsure.

MIL bought a set of Hanyupinying VCD from China during holidays. DS picked up hanyupinying from watching those VCD when he was in N2.
