How to toilet train children

I am one of those lucky mothers I guess. Toilet training was a breeze with my 2 kiddos. Did away with the diapers when they were awake, followed by during their nap time. I place the rubber mat and a towel under their mattress cover in case they pass urine in their sleep.


I did not bother to train them to go diaperless at night. They still get their milk an hour b4 bedtime and there is the normal routine of emptying their bladders and brushing their teeth b4 they sleep. Other then that, no deliberate attempts in training the off diapers. But when they wake up with their pullups dry on most mornings, that was when I decided to let them go diaperless and I let them know that they are without their diapers. There were a few accidents but it on the whole, pretty manageable.

Both kiddos were off diapers in the day by about 2+yrs old but for nite, DD took a little longer, about 4+yrs old, DS 3+yrs old.

Tks schellen, so the cloth/plastic backing type really does exist. I heard abt it but when i enquired at the dept store, the sales staff just gave me a blank look...... will look around, but will probably start with the disposable ones as suggested by ZacK. The motivation will be for her not to wet her fav hello kitty bedspread

what's interesting is that my boy who's turning 4 in Nov will wake up with a dry diaper once in a while, even tho he drinks 180ml of milk before sleeping every night. It's my 5+ girl who has a wet diaper when she doesn't take in fluids before sleeping..... ?

Noted that your boy only had a couple of accidents. hmmm, do boys hv better bladder control ?

It's really a leap of faith when we decide to let our little ones go diaperless ... I guess for DS1, the constant reminder especially before he sleeps kind of sinks into his subconscious. He also hates the wet PJ feeling so maybe that did the trick for him too. I was surprised a few times towards the end of the first mth, that he would wake up on his own accord, switch the toilet lights, pee, off the lights and go back to bed without any assistance.

And yes, we started with going without diapers for afternoon naps first before letting him build up confidence to not wear diapers at night.

Go to those medical supplies stores that sell wheelchairs & stuff. It's cheaper. I buy mine from there. $5 for 20pcs (small ard 17\" by 28\"). The larger ones are more exp, around $0.50 per pc.

My boy is 2+. Bought him some toilet training pants, sweet talk him for days yet refuse to wear any. He just simply doesnot want to take his diapers off!!!!!! :x .........Since I am FTWM, I didnot really spend the effort and time to toilet train him .....he will be attending Nursery next yr so it will be good to get him ready w/o diapers :oops: but my MIL says when the day comes, he will be ready...........like to hear some advises. Thanks

That was what my mum said to me too. That was when I tried starting at 18months. But it turn out our wait was worth it cos it was almost effortless trying to toilet train him when he was older (read: more ready).

Different kids achieve different things by different ages. I think it's acceptable for them to start toilet training at 3yo if they are not ready at 2+.

My girl's been sleeping w/o diaper for her afternoon naps since she was 3+. will start with the pep talk and encourage her, and start going diaperless at night next week. Tks !
