I am wondering is it neccessary to send our child to enrichment class such as "igenius"? The fees are not cheap ($1,200 for 3 months) and is it guarantee that out child will be extra-ordinary after attending the class?


I was quite shocked when my friend told me that her girl who is 14 mths is able to recognise A to Z, fruits and animal, colours…after attending the class…becos most of us who have been flashing card to our children are able to identify and recognise that…

To put things in perspective... I do not think that by simply attending enrichment classes will make our kids extra-ordinary.

I'm sure if there are parents out there with the know-how, time and patience... Their kids can turn out equally well without any form of external enrichment classes.

For me, I do not have the required know-how... And thus would have to rely on \"specialist\" to help enrich my son. In relation to your specific qn above, I stopped my son after 1 term with iGenius, as I thought I wanted to see something more \"tangible\" from him after attending his enrichment classes... iGenius is geared towards right brain training and development thus supposedly to boost creativity etc... Somehow for me, I find it a bit too abstract and subjective as abilities related to the right brain are not easily measured or quantified compared with the left brain.

Perhaps I'm too shallow and eager to see results?? As to be fair to any external program... They sometimes require a length of time before any obvious results can be seen :oops: ... So I wont be able to say whether iGenius is good or not, I do not think I gave it enough time to make an appropriate assessment.

Can someone share if it is common that by 14 months, MOST kids can recognise A-Z, fruits and animals and colours as long as they are exposed to flashcards? I am just curious if this is a proven approach, that's all.

My girl was able to identity A-Z, animals, fruits by 14 months…as for colour …no…

I flashed the cards to her every night before she turned 1 year old. …It is proven as long as parent are willing to scarifice their time to do so…
i was taught by another colleague to do so…

She is able to say A is for apple to Z is for zebra…when she was 18 months…it is only a matter of time that a child is able to recognise and identify provided that we expose to them …it will be easier…

I have tried Glen Doman recently …it does not work for my girl at all…she cant remember the spelling of the words but only the pronouncation. But according to some mothers, it works for them as they have exposed to thier child in a very early stage…

Hi Ks2me, I don't think the key is whether they are exposed to flash cards. It's whether they are introduce to A-Z, fruits animals and colours. Can be by book or by other methods of teaching. The flash cards is just a convienient method of learning. I did not introduce flash cards to my kid until 2 years old but before that he can recognise the colours, fruits and animals that have been taught to him.

I think enrichment programs are not so much a neccessity but a good to have. For me, I was quite blur about teaching young kids/ flash cards before I go to Shichida with my boy so it is beneficial for us. I think now harm trying as long as you and your kid enjoys the lessons.


Can't really say for Glen Norman method because I don't really follow. But how old is your girl? 18 months is a bit young to know the spelling. Recognising the whole words first is probably better?

Oh…my girl is 23 months. She is interested in flashing the card to herself instead of us doing that. And ended up reading the wrong word.like iron, shoes,switches…haha…But able to identify the objects…


Glen Doman seemed to work for some but not for my girl.
She is more interested in reading storybooks and able to memorise and read out the whole sentence for some pages. quite normal cos most kids can do so if parent has been reading to them.

How old is yr child? Are they in sch now? any good pre-nusery and phonics classes to recommend?

I think it is great that your girl is more interested in reading books. I will probably encourage that as that is a start to independent learning. My son also do that for books he like. But I think he only memorise what I read to him and associate it with the picture he see. But its so cute when they do that.

I am thinking of practising Glen Norman encyclopedic knowledge mtd on my boy, but so far, did not really follow his way. For words recognition, so far I have better luck playing words lotto with him.

My boy is turning 3 and is in Sparkletots since 18 months. So far, I feel that he is happy there but some parents feel that they don't teach enough to the kids other than songs and nursery rythms (which I think is fine for now) I probably will not sent him for phonics class. Thinking of getting a good phonics DVD for that instead.

ks2me, yes I think every child is different. Just have to teach according to their prefered learning styles and expose them to diffrent things and ways of learning and make it enjoyable for them.
