My son shared that during one of his CL enrichment class. The teacher shared with them some part of TT's CL speech. It was to educate the children not to speak such mandarin. Well.... the kids have a good laugh after hearing the speech.

Thanks, Funz, tho I find it funny, over-doing it may send out wrong message, and so need to exercise some form of self-restraint.MMM:

I think if my kids' teachers were to do that, I will have a sit down session with my kids and have a talk about the topic 'mockery'.
TT is in his 70s and so is my Dad, those of their era did not take Chinese as a 2nd language. Malay was their 2nd language unless they attend Chinese schools. At least give this fella a pat on his back for trying. Gotta start somewhere right. -
Points for efforts should be given, but unfortunately, they are usually only worth 1 mark.
-
Funz:
Yes, we should give credit to him for trying especially his age. However, if he is uncomfortable with using the language, I think he should just use a cover over voice like TCB. Nothing wrong with that. As human, we just have to acknowledge our weaknesses and use next best solution. In moments like that, it's not about showing your courage to speak a 2nd language that you are uncomfortable with. It's about clear communication and ensure people got the message. I got feedback from folks who can only understand CL that they don't really know what he is talking about and changed channel. How to reach out???I think if my kids' teachers were to do that, I will have a sit down session with my kids and have a talk about the topic 'mockery'.

I believed the CL teacher's intention is to educate the importance of speaking good mandarin as they are after all in a CL enrichment class. -

Again... Feel free to agree or disagree with me. This are my views only on how I am assessing/eliminating my choices in time for Sat. This is not a bid to influence anyone's choices, if any, your views may help me to further refine my own assessment of the candidates

Zack, I feel that we are on the same boat in terms of filtering process. I am for TCB, TJS - his political agenda still seems abit too strong for my liking. Anyway, he is only in his 50's. He still can try for the next PE if he is really good. TKL - doesn't stand out at all. TT - yes doubt I will vote for him after all that has been seen and heard on tv. -

Angelight:
They are openly \"supporting\" TT, isn't it? Or must use the word endorse then is considered endorse?Just to correct, PAP did not endorse TT, only the unions and some clans.

limlim:
If PAP can endorse TT, why NS cannot endorse TJS?
As for speaking up, the PM and a few other have been speaking up for TT on MSM rite.. no? -
Way2go, of course i know, cos that's the way it applied on TJS too. You see Nicole Seah, Ang Yong Guan and that Vincent guy all speaking at TJS rally to support him (so called in their personal capacity). And they are all from opposition party. So in a way, TJS is also \"endorsed\" by the opposition political parties, even though he kept saying he is \"above politics\".
Way2GO:
So soon after 2011 GE, any openly PAP endorsed Presidential candidate will probably also face the voters' wrath. Thus the subterfuge.Angelight:
Just to correct, PAP did not endorse TT, only the unions and some clans.

For instance, the unions (with the exception of IPA) all comes under NTUC.
The Sec'y Gen of NTUC is a PAP Cabinet Minister. The NTUC has been mobilised on many occasions to support the PAP. U see the link now?
Hope u see the light, Angelight, n not be taken in by the subterfuge. -

This may only shows that he may be a good man.. but not necessarily a good president.
- Someone who is sincere, earnest and wanting to help his people. Do not have personal contacts with him even though I grew up in Ayer Rajah constituency but I understand that he is really well-liked by people on the ground. On more than one occasion have I heard through separate discussions with my friends that TCB does ask the sick and needy to go to his clinic for free treatments, you cant get more civic-mindedness than this.
If there is no absolute power in place, I may have supported TCB. But in the current state of things, The ruling party has absolute power.. and I feel we need a stronger president in place.ZacK:
I feel there is nothing wrong with the other candidate declaring this BEFORE the election. He is just making his stand. And sorta tell pple \"what to expect\" if he is voted in..- Someone principled (I agree with his reason that now is not the right time to be saying that $500K pay is enough and the rest should go back to the people or that one will donate half the pay etc. If one so desires, this should be done after the incumbent is voted in) and does what he say he will do.
IF only the PAP does the same thing.. Letting pple know what to expect BEFORE the elections.. e.g. transport fare hikes, CPF minimum sum up etc etc.. -
Zack, totally agree with you on your assessment. you've really spoken my thoughts.
ZacK=:
Every one will have their own \"selection\" criteria... Given the candidates this year and noting that there is none that really stands out as the obvious choice... At this moment my vote seems to be swinging towards TCB, just verbalising my thots below and in no way am I advocating/influencing anyone's decision :

- Someone who should have enough experience to know how the govt works and knows the system. Thus rather than taking the confrontational stance may be able to his knowledge of the system to make/influence changes in his own ways.
- At least known to be someone who airs alternative views even though he was with PAP.
TT though he certainly has the stature and wealth of knowledge, I am just afraid that he will be more of a \"yes\" man than TCB. Given his many years in cabinet, just curious to know how many times he actually \"veto-ed\" or aired alternative views on govt policies? And having greater linkages to the govt, may cause dissent on the ground should he be voted in.
TJS, personally I still doubt his motive. Not saying that he will not be the right candidate but I think he needs to do more at the \"grassroots\" level, at least to evidence to the people that he really has our interests close to his heart. Maybe his time will come in the future but not at this point, at least for me. Confrontational and not knowing the boundaries of the constitution may either lead to frustrations on his part or disappointment by the people due to the \"promises\", of being the check and balance and alternative voice so to speak, he made as part of his election campaign. Not principled enough i.e. tendency to \"bend\" under pressure at least in my opinion that I would like to see in a figure head.
TKL, may not come across as confrontational as TJS, probably wants to be the champion/hero of those smaller voices in society. Personally I do not quite agree with views on NS etc. At this point, probably the weakest candidate of the four for me.
