Hi! Anyone in CHIJ TPY currently or entering next year?

My elder gal is currently in P1. The younger one will join her sister next year.

She’s happy going to school now though the first half year was abit of a strain on her.

Sori for late reply. I rarely sign in. There was no extra work to be done at home. DD is a year-end child and needs her afternoon nap. So, was very tired by late afternoon. Also, she had abit of a problem keeping track of what she needed to do based on the list the teacher wrote on the board.

She's fine now. She did very well for the mid year Common Test so, I guess that means she's not lagging behind.

I think the 2010 P1 will be having their orientation on 13 Nov…get the info from my current P1 gal’s school newsletter.

CHIJ is well known for its dance performance achievement. The sch does offer ballet classes for P1 gals.

My younger gal, will be in P1 next year, is currently learning ballet from cc. I am wondering if I shd let her continue with her cc, or shd I just let her take up ballet in sch. She already obtained her primary cert, and now preparing for grade 1 exam.

Why not do both, if she likes ballet, and it doesn't take up too much of your time and resources?

My considerations would be whether the ballet lessons in school are conducted at a convenient time, ie. it would be after school that the child has to stay back for the classes.

Also, if the ballet lessons in school can be considered a CCA when it is compulsary at Pr 3 to have a CCA - it would be a plus point to be already doing something that the child is interested and already participating in.

Another consideration would be whether the school’s ballet syllabus is similar to the one at the cc, ie. whether it’s the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) or Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing (CSTD) that your dd has already passed her Primary grade. Although I personally don’t think this is a major issue, unless you have very strong preference for either one of the syllabus.

One other consideration would be that if for whatever reason your dd later changes her primary school, then you would have to withdraw her from the ballet classes at the school and re-enrol her for private classes elsewhere.

Again I don’t think this is a major consideration, altho’ depending on timing of the withdrawal vs the graded exams, it may mean that she could miss a grade, if she were to join another ballet school later. This is what happened to my dd, but I personally don’t feel it’s an issue, as my dd does ballet cos she loves to dance, and it is not really important to us that she passes all her grades at a very young age, so other than having had to find an alternative ballet school with suitable timing etc when she changed primary schools, it wasn’t a major issue.

If the school has a good dance studio and the ballet teacher is one that the child likes and can relate to, and of course timing is convenient, it may be worth thinking about. Costs-wise I think it would be about the same doing it in school vs the cc.

Thanks for the feedback. In term of $$, it is not a major concern as the courses fee are about the same price, and both sch offer the same syllabus from RAD. And both schools are very near my house, so there is not much issue with tpt.

Actually I am more inclined to let her join the school ballet class. The school ballet teacher is the reputable dancer - Ms Sandra Ho, and the sch offers more exposure in terms of national performance. And I believe the sch will schedule the extra lesson timings (for exams) accordingly to the school hours ie, my gal will not have to skip sch lessons to attend the exam or extra lessons.

One of the mummies told me that the P1 gals who enrol for the ballet classes start from the basic, but I am not sure if she has to retake the exam. If my gal were to retake the primary exam in sch, I presume the exam date will be in 2011? and Grade 1 exam in 2012 when she could have it earlier next year 2010 if she continues with her CC classes.

My gal is quite attached to the CC teacher, who is really very patient and helpful. The CC teacher asked me if I am going to register my gal for the grade 1 exam next year (Mar -May 2010), as she is starting to plan the extra lessons timetable…most likely to be on weekdays. I have emailed to CHIJ and enquire the sch hours for P1 2010. The school supposed to operate single sessions next year, but apparently they have not obtained confirmation with MOE. I hope the P1 orientation can give a clear indication.
