I just saw a 3-4 yo left at a table alone to "chope" the seat, keeping the child occupied with an ice-cream in hand while the parents went separate ways to order their food. And from where the parents are queuing for the food, they could not eyeball their child at all… I was so amazed at the parents and was watching the child for them. In such a case, people may not ask "excuse me, can I take the seats?" It will be "Excuse me, I am going to help myself with your child.

Yes, I have also witnessed such cases. I practically stopped eating and \"helped watched\" the kid(s) while both parents walked off to order food. These children are usually not even 5 years old! Such parents are very relax and laid back.

When I going out with my kids alone I seriously dun know any other way then to leave my kids at the table ...asking jie jie to watch mei mei ( still in the stroller) plus I will tell jie jie to yell or shout for me when she in trouble.
I dun think I can manage holding a bowl of noodle n pushing the stroller n watching jiejie to make sure she dun bum into anyone holding hot food at the same time.

In your case, you are one adult with 2 kids....it is tough and if your jie jie is trained to know how to shout loudly to protect mei mei, it might still work on a jie jie instinct. In their case, it was 2 adults and 1 kid and they happily went to queue for their own food. I would be more compassionate if I meet a mum of your situation and if my child is with me(if she is not I am afraid the mother may think I have other motives..haha), I may just offer to eyeball her children while she buys her stuff. In any case, I am sure if you move to buy sth, you will still ensure you can see them from where you are. This couple was completely back-turning on the child and were at a stall very very far away which was why I became concerned. :slapshead: I told my child, when nothing happened, mummy seemed the paranoid one but when something did happen, everything would be called \"too late\" in hindsight.

It can be very confusing how people respond to the question of:

                  "Hi… is this seat taken?"

Some will say "No…" and when I try to sit down, they will say they mean "No… cannot sit… got people already".

Some will say "Yes…" and when I walk away, they will say "Yes… you can sit. No one is sitting there."

So nowadays, I shorten my question to "Can?" with a smile.

And when people ask me, I will just wave at the empty seats, and say "Please" with a smile.

What the parents did send a shudder up my spine. I tend to be absent-minded if I have lotsa stuff to look after. I put my kids in a child leash and tied it to my wrist so that if I momentarily forgot, they would still be tied to me. My worst nightmare is to lose my toddler.

Chief.. I share the sentiment.. so now my questions will be

Can we sit? with a smile

If people ask, we will just show the hand gesture for them to sit.. with a smile..

                      😉

Chief and CastleHouse, you are exactly right, which is why I ask very specifically now about the seat, occupied?

And for people asking me, I will say \"You may sit\".

                        No more \"Yes\" or \"No\"... 😂
