Hi, my DD was in RA for 2 subjects. I think it would help a lot if she usually reads widely in her subjects of interest. If it is Science that yr DD is keen on and she wants to study to prepare, then perhaps reading up A level textbooks may be helpful. Hope this helps your DD. All the Best!

Hi angell, you have mentioned tt to be able to get into RA in sec 3, one must do a lot of read up of the subject like to the yr 5,6 stuffs … So if the kid don’t read up so widely but the results are pretty good in s1&2, wonder is there a chance to get into RA?

During my dd's time(she's Yr 5 now), to apply for RA at Sec 3, the student must first meet the GPA requirement, can't remember the exact details, but I think at least 3.6 for overall GPA and also for the subject applied to. There are selection tests and recommendations from teachers as well. Things may be different now, heard that now RA is counted as one subject.

I think the scope of the tests is pretty wide, so perhaps it would help if the child usually reads books (not just textbooks) and magazines, not the last minute kind of reading but done over years. I think if the child is really interested in the subject, we parents do not have to force them to read, they would want to themselves. To prepare for the test itself, then maybe A level textbooks may help. I notice that the textbooks nowadays are very interesting, easy to read and well illustrated. If I don't remember wrongly, topics to be tested are given.

There are girls who don't read widely but got in RA after selection tests. But I have the impression that a number of these girls did not make it into RA at Year 5.

As for Maths RA, most(or all?) are in the school's Maths Olympiad training.
