No. I'm not referring to PH on Sat. that one I can understand. it was PH on a weekday. and if I recall correctly, they had a teacher's training day in the first half already. Another one is upcoming. I wonder if this is a teacher training college?Hi hquek,
Hmmmmm, so far it's the ph, school hols, if ph falls on sat, mon hol (the 5wk wday rule), polling day off. -
MandyMummy:
I have heard worse. One parent asked the Principal how he is going to groom her child to be a President Scholar and why should her child attend this school?? :yikes:
I wonder what will happen if the Principal started laughing and fell off his chair..... -
MandyMummy:
Was this asked of a primary school or secondary school? The parent has high expectations.pinky:
do you think parents will demand teachers: what can you do to help my child achieve 4A* in the coming PSLE or 6 pointers in the O levels?

In the end, the parent could not get any \"guarantee\" from the Principal and enrolled her child in another school. Dunno if she made deals with the other Principal as well?MandyMummy:

don't think so.....my kindy not CC, so there's no designated teachers training day. The kindy already follows the term hols of MOE. I expect the teachers to be trained on those days, if they need to be upgraded. -
SAHM_TAN:
now you know. But then this is about the P and how she is leading (to me, misleading) the school. Onboard the pirate ship and a bit difficult to come off (no vacancies anywhere else good).

Anyways, I do recognise many teachers have got hard lives and that there are monster parents who expect the impossible. I do salute teachers and admire them for I am unable to do the same. -

This has been demanded by a pupil before as experienced by a friend. On the first day of her teaching career, the pupil arrogantly asked her \"what have you got to teach that I don't already know?\" -

Degree holders with honors..
How much do teachers and engineers draw these days? In my stone age teachers had rather meagre salaries and engineers much better salaries.limlim:
Actually, I find teaches 1 of the job with the most benefits.. and salary is comparable or better than other professions requirement similar qualifications, especially engineers.
Engineers in MNC, maybe $2200 ~ $2800?
Teachers, $3200 (during training at NIE).
These are starting pay. I guess, civil servant increment is higher then a number of MNCs/manufacturing.
Yes, in the olden days, teachers are not well paid.. but over the last decade, it has changed greatly.. nowadays, teachers enjoy much better pay and benefits.. and there are also various allowances, and also some \"cash\" incentives if they stay in the profession for x number of years.. etc.. -
sall:
I'm just sharing my experience. To limlim,
If your child's sch happens to conduct fire-drill for half a day, that does not mean every sch in S'pore is doing that.sall:
I didn't say that it is the same. but fundamentally, it involves teaching, althou teacher may have additional admin duties. Whatever it is, it is part of the job scope and remuneration package. In many industries, it's common to have cross functional duties.. isn't it?You may have taught in a private sch or tuition centre. This is very different from teaching in a govt sch. There is no basis for comparison.
sall:
Apparently, they did not always make the right choice..If MOE does not choose carefully and all Tom, Dick or Harry can join the teaching profession, then more parents will be complaining. We should be thankful MOE is choosy.
I say MOE is choosy doesn't meant they're doing the correct screening.. who knows what they're looking for.. And, looking at the type of teachers my students had.. I really had no faith in their judgement.sall:
yeah.. sure.. I'm expecting this type of response right from the very beginning. You have to teach in a govt sch to understand the work of teachers. Please show respect for them instead of just declaring how 'shiok' teaching is.
Many people may be applying to be teachers because they, like you, think that teaching is so 'shiok'.
\"You have to teach in a govt sch to understand the work of teachers. \"
That's the most common defense.
In the same principle, you can't understand how difficult it is to be a bus captain, you can't understand how difficult it is to maintain the MRTs, you can't understand how difficult it is to be a million dollar minister, you can't understand how difficult it is to be a million dollar president, you can't understand how difficult it is to be the CEO of SMRT, , you can't understand how difficult it is to be a taxi driver etc etc.. until you experience it yourself.. the list never ends..
So, stop complaining about irregular bus timings, train breakdowns, millionaire ministers, millionaire presidents, millionaire SMRT CEO, reckless taxi drivers.. because we never experience it, we are not in a position to comment.
And, in the same context, one should not complain about terrible tasting food unless you're a cook yourselves to understand how difficult it is to cook..
Is that right? IMO, no. Every job has a price to it. You are paid for what you're supposed to do and deliver. we compare based on industrial practices and market rate. Generally, teachers are quite well paid.
Actually, I already pre-empt with \"which profession has no stress\".. who can come in and say you have a easy and overpaid job? good for you then.
holidays after holidays.. kids no need to attend school, and parents still have to pay for the school bus, kindergarten fees etc..
I respect committed and good teachers, if I encounter one. I guess some of the teachers who taught me in the past are quite good.. as students, we can tell.
However, seems that standards are dropping..
