I am paying the same rate for both kids (G5 and G8) which is $300 for each child, 4 lessons of 1 hour (to come to my place).

Just noticed lesson is for 1 hour. In that case, fees seems very reasonable especially for your grade 8 child. If pro-rate to 45 minutes it will be $225 per 4 lessons.

For grade 8, I think dd's teacher is charging $300+ for 45 minutes :faint: No theory & need to travel to teacher's house.

Oh yah, my ds' is 45min lesson altho' he's diploma level. Definitely for instrumental, no theory and travel to teacher's house lah.

Theory is done separately on his own with another teacher, for which we pay S$140 for grade 6-8 theory.

Have you tried group theory lessons in music school? Fees substantially cheaper.
Or more advisable to go for individual theory lesson?

By the way, I pm you the other day regarding strings teacher's attributes.

I didn't receive any PM at all. I just checked again. Don't have.

He IS doing group theory lesson in a music school. Advanced grades for theory, I think s$140 is quite reasonable lah. There's only 2 of them in the \"group\" anyway, so it's really quite good I think. It's an advanced teacher (owner) that teaches them. I already checked around. Mostly not much demand for theory lessons at this levels bc most do until grade 5 and are happy to stop. When my ds did grade 5 theory 1-to-1, it was S$180/4 lessons. We did that for \"express\" intensive training to take the grade 5 in a short while. He got a distinction for that. It was he himself who wanted to continue to do grade 8 theory for his own enrichment.

I actually charge 20 $ base charge + (5$ per grade) for one hour practical lesson. So grade 8 works out at 60$ per lesson and grade 5 will be $45 per lesson. Now the reason I charge this is because last time my diploma teachers only charged me 80$ per lesson, and I feel that it is disrespect to charge more than people who have higher qualifications and more established than me.
Woah, does that mean for a beginner you charge S$20 X 4 lessons? ๐Ÿ˜œ Very cheap, leh. *hehe* I am paying S$180/4 lessons for my 3yo.

I am still relatively new to the teaching field, so I charge lower first. Maybe when I get more famous I can start charging more. Anyway, quite a number of my students learn music just because they love it and not all of them have the financial power to afford expensive fees, so I try to accomodate to them also. And also like what I said, I don't think I want to charge higher than my teachers.

Probably a teacherโ€™s charges commensurate with teaching experience and the capacity of teaching?

I heard of a NAFA teacher (not sure if sheโ€™s still teaching in NAFA now though) charging $50 for a 45 minute (lower music grade) lesson at her place. My kidsโ€™ private piano teacher charged me $170 per hour (beginnerโ€™s price) even though she was teaching my son grade 3 and grade 4 non-exam pieces. But my guess would be - I would expect to pay more accordingly if she were to prepare him for exams. She has a degree in music (diploma in teaching if Iโ€™m not wrong) and has been teaching music for about 20 years.

OMG. Anyway, I am just curious how much fee do you think I will command based on my experience? Have degree in music and have been teaching music for 4 years now. Reasonably consistent exam results among students. No competition winners yet among students.

May I say that I am pleasantly shocked with your charges? One young teacher with grade 8 qualification and 3 years of 'teaching experience' quoted me $110 or so per hr for beginners. With your qualifications, I would expect your charges to be higher than hers. ๐Ÿ˜„

PS: I didn't engage her as her teaching wasn't impressive.

Did you mean $110 for 4 one hour lessons instead? Some of the top teachers in Singapore charge lesser than that for diploma lessons.
