I dont know what benefits can i achieve from her being there as art does not add extra marks now n when she gets to p6, Im contemplating on stopping her, some say Nafa cert. help add points to her score should she decide on a good secondary school. Can anyone advise the benefits of art classes for PSlE

My impression is arts stimulate creativity.
Not aware that it can add points during PSLE.

yup, dun think so. unless maybe useful during appeals to try and get into the sec school of your choice.

what was the initial intention in sending your gals to NAFA? Did they enjoy themselves there? The tangible benefit will probably be gaining admission to SOTA under DSA system prior to the PSLE. The intangible benefits as discussed by many other parents are probably inexhaustive.

Get our children to express their wishes and discuss the possibilities.

Artbeaucourp, Hi, I started to send my grl for art classes as early as 3 yrs old, at that tender age most kids love drawing, yup, a form of expressing themselves and to build up creativity. My grl love drawing so i eventually signed her up at Nafa. Kinderart was very impressieve and she brought back quite unique pieces of artwork..... when she reached primary school, art at nafa was more advanced then in her primary school, had still life drawing,chinese calligraphy, learning primary and secondary colours etc...my grl still love art and dnt mind continuing but my emphasis is on her academic performance now.. she does have piano and chess and this takes up quite a bit of time aside from her other enrichment classes. (not doing too well academically) If she is one that is discipline in studying and keeping up with her school work, I wouldnt mind that extra time for art. Im having 2nd thoughts about withdrawing for fear that I may regret if she needs art in p6 to help her to a secondary school of her choice. Ive not much knowledge about SOTA but heard frm a friend recently that one of the requirements is to produce his past 3 yrs of artwork frm the primary school. . Regarding DSA, at the rate shes going in school now,I dnt think she can qualify as I think results really got to be very good. Oh! btw her art is very normal, no special talent.

you are certainly in a dilemma. Priortising in the face of time constraint can always leave us vacillating. Your considerations are in your child’s best interests. And she needs to know her mom is not exercising her authority as a parent and telling her what the top priority is and what is not. Perhaps we just need to take a step back and seek their opinions and make sure parent and child are on the same page. Talk things through. But this does not mean allowing our children to have their way.

Compromise.

More importantly, our children must know that our utmost concern is their happiness. If they do not perform well academically, my concern will be their feelings. Does that make them feel lousy? Will they be able to take mockery from some insensitive individuals who label people…If they are nonchalant, my concern would be how they perceive life at their age.
Rationalising must go hand in hand with justifying the importance of their emotions.

i would agree with artbeaucoup that u should hear what your child wants. to me the self-confidence of a child is very important. and if art helps your child to build that confidence and she loves and enjoys it, feel u can let her continue. i find it sad that our children in spore end up chasing paper qualifications and neglected other areas of development such as enjoyment and appreciation of the arts. they just make a person more complete, more \"wholesome\"...perhaps some guidance in time mgt can help her manage these a little better?

I used to think of Art Class as a waste of time too. But my perception changed after enrolling my kids in http://kidsart.com.sg/Programs.htm. Unlike most arts classes, Kids Art's main focus is on the fundamentals basics of drawing instead of creativity. The kids are taught pencil shading, lines, tones and perspective.

thanks for the recommendation chamonix! I just sign my boy up for the tiong Bahru class. the teacher was really patient and encouraging during the \"carrot trial\" . Hope fully the art class will help him practise his fine motor skills more.

hello artbeaucoup and foreverj, Yes artbeaucoup, I certainly am in a dilemma, not any more though, reading both yr posts has made me rethink my decision and has kind of \"opened up\" my mind. Deep in me I really do not want her to drop art. After reading yr posts i casually asked whether she would like to continue art next yr and she replied yes.


Yup, compromising and time management has totally been left out. My mind has been filled with high scores, good grades etc.... to the point of forgetting my childs feelings. :oops: I will have a more serious talk with her to find out how she really feel about all her other enrichment classes too and work on it frm there. Each time i meet up with parents in her school, discussion would be on how to better their daughters academically and where and what enrichment ctes would be good for science,maths.etc /// I guess i forgot about an all round development of the child... will have to start spacing out her classes properly for next yr.

Hi moonee, glad that progress is made and though the predicament has not been resolved entirely, a load must have been lifted off your chest... I always feel that sincerity and the willingness to emphathise is the panacea to our problems. Have a pep talk with your girl...

Hi mincy, glad to be of help.

Did you manage to speak with Adrian and Kassie? Both are very patient and good with kids. There's also Paul but I think he's not back from his hometown visit. I have yet to meet the rest of the teachers at Kids Art TB but I think they must be just as great.

And I hope your son will enjoy the lessons and the company there
