          Dear atutor2001

I posted a query in another thread asking what is a decent score for booklet b. It is difficult for my son to score 36. He is from one of the sch listed on top ten sch papers. What is yr advice to getting a high score? His booklet a is usually a 54 or 56. Thank u.

This is just my view and observation.

The general norm of getting an A is that one must not make more than 5 mistakes in Section A and get at least 25 marks in Sect B.

To get A*, one must not make more than 1 mistake in Section A and get at least 33 marks in Sect B.

Yes, the above norms can be derived with simple arithmetic but what I am trying to say is that it is crucial to do well in Section A because each 2 marks in Section A is so much easier to get than the 2 marks in Section B.

To get high score for Section B, my guess is that one should try to :

            a) remember all standard key words
            b) read questions with extra care for words such as : all, only, suggest, is, before, after.... These are very simple words but will change the required answer totally.
            c) read the words in any given picture/diagram carefully and have keen eyes for \"spot the difference\"
            d) give explanation even though the question did not ask for. For example, \"Which material is the best conductor of heat?\" Material A because it gets ...
            e) remember to link the answer back to the question. For example, \"Why seeds does not need sunlight to germinate?\" Answer, \"It has seed leaves\" (incomplete) Better to add \"which contain stored food .....does not need to make its own food .... that's why don't need sunlight\" (it is very long and tedious, which is why it is very hard to get each mark in Sect B)
            f) analysis skills - these need training and there are different methods for different types of questions. But in a nutshell, don't analyse mentally, draw it out in any way, be it mind mapping, model, flow chart....
            g) for challenging question - try to identify the topic and have confidence to apply concepts learnt

It is easier said than done because somehow most of our students lack confident and would only dare to write what they have seen/done before - sometimes to the extent of including information that is not relevant to the question.

Another way to learn how to tackle Sect B is to discuss with them on why marks are not given even though their answer seems correct.

            For example :
\"Stomata release water\" is wrong because Stomata are too small for water (liquid state) to flow out.
            Stomata release water vapour (correct)

Science is very specific. Above are just my personal opinion and may not be correct. Hope it is of help.

                        Hi Auntie andante,

My answer is (1) because the same polarity of the batteries are connected to one another.
