          wcw,

          your kid with cma?
how is he progressing? how you find the course?
my boy is using his fingers to count. 😓

          hi jedamum 🙂
yes, DS just started CMA, u might want to read the post at CMA on my comments http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1352&start=740
he likes the class alot, and we are really happy he can now do simple 1-digit counting. after he had been listening to the multiplication song, given by CMA, DS now knows his 2 time table 🙂
are you interested to register ur boy?

          oh thanks!
my ds2 will use his fingers to count. i am trying to use ds1's past abacus book to 'teach' ds2 for now. tempted to try CMA, but not much 'enrichment funds' left 😓 cos intending to try out a new EL programme for ds1. 😓

oh ok... i was very tempted when i saw the program 🙂
so went ahead and register DS w/o telling DH 😉
lucky we see results if not :moneyflies:
since ur DS1 had learned b4, u can try teach ur DS2 😉

I contemplated sending DS2 for abacus, but feedback from DS1 was that it did not helped him in his P1 math back then. So beginning 1st Sept, I sent DS2 to Enopi math. They teach basic thinking skills and critical thinking skills. I treat this as a foundation course to Primary school math.

                Hi jedamum

My DS2 also uses his fingers to count and I bought those Kumon Addition and Subtraction books for him to practise. CMA crosses my mind several time, but just like you, I also have enrichment funds budget to consider (a lot used for DS1). Is finger counting acceptable in primary school or at least for K1 now?

                  thanks wcw, hifive, silverhorse.

                  wcw,
good that your boy respond well to the programme. looks like your little boy is pretty pack with lots of fun enrichment activities! 😄

                  silverhorse,
my ds1 also did abacus (not cma though). up til now, he can't recall what he learnt! hahaha...:P

                  hifive,
my boy will turn around and hide his fingers from my sight and then told me he uses his brain to count. 😓 it is getting better now for addition within 10 that he need not use fingers (due to frequent practice ba). i am now teaching him mental 12+5 so far ok, except when it comes to things like 9+6 (with 'carrying over') he is still struggling with the concept).

i think finger counting is still acceptable in K1 ba. now is to tell them to imagine the finger in their head so teacher will not see. heehee.

                    Hi jedamum

Thanks for your advice. Will try to teach him now how to mental count. Appreciate your tips - very useful to mums like myself who is teaching ds2 at home.

                      hi silverhorse,
what is the fees like at Enopi math? and what they do?

                      Hi WCW,

I pay $140 per month ( 4 lessons ). The branch is at Beauty World Plaza, and each lesson lasts 1.5hrs. In Basic Thinking skills, they learn counting skills ( addition n subtraction) and depending on your child's skills, he/she may advance to multiplication or division. Homework is workbook with lots of repetitive practice. In Critical Thinking skills, the child is taught creative ways to solve some simple questions.

Enopi is originated from Korea. and they do English and Math.

My DD also use finger counting and sometimes can still count wrongly 😞

For sum like 19+6, she will put out 6 fingers and start counting from 19.
For sum like 19+16 , I got to remind her dun use fingers, write down n do vertical carry over.

I still remember when I was in k1, my mom is happy that I can count from 1-10 🙂
Nowadays kid got to learn everything at such a fast pace
