GEP 2011 - Screening & Selection

My boy also cleared round 1. We din expect cos he said he can’t do the Math Paper.

But he is not taking round 2 cos we rather let him stay at home revising his final exams. Those 4 PSLE marking days are v impt, need to cramp in everything…Anyway, he does not want to change school cos wont be switching even if he gets it.
We also dun want him to be too stressed out, we alri v stressed out now.
His school stream them into best 2 classes aft Pri 1. He is alri in the best class. As long as he doesnt drop out from this best class, i m contented. And I am v worried that he’ll get kick out this year cos his results have been deterioting since beginning this year.

a) besides Tao Nan & Nan Hua, which other schools have this 'twinning' programme ?

how about other hot schools like - Rosyth, St Hilda, Catholic High, Ai Tong, Maris Stella, South View, Rulang, Henry Park, CHIJ St Nicholas, MGS, SCGS, Bukit Panjang, others ? also got twinning ?
b) for round 1 Maths paper - besides setting MCQ, do they set problem solving heuristics qns ?

I think 'twinning' term is more applicable for GE schools becos it means GEP twine (or twin?) with High Ability kids :hugs: I understand quite a few other GEP schools have twinning eg Nanyang and ACSP.

For round 1, besides MCQs, there are a few FRQs and should have some heuristics ques. You know like most boys, DS can't remember much and usually don't tell much

i hv received pm asking me abt the type of questions. Honestly, although my girl did tell me some of the qn but i dun rem liao, anyway for those interested on the format and qn type, please go and take a look at page 5 of the 'all about gep' thread.

Haha yes, in fact many older siblings also can't recall much and GAT is something we can't really prepare. It is fair. This means no advantage for those with older siblings. Just let the younger kid have his/her own experience :please:

Info on the twinning programme in Nanhua and BICEP programme in Tao Nan from MOE, dated Sep 2006:


Two schools will be introducing their own innovations to the GEP, and will be supported by MOE in their initiatives:

* Nan Hua Primary School will be piloting the integration of classes for its GEP and high ability non-GEP students for about 50% of their curriculum, starting from the Primary 4 cohort in 2007. The GEP students will continue to take separate classes in English, Maths and Science. (See Annex A for write-up). The integrated classes will have about 30 students per class, while the GEP classes in the core academic subjects will have 20 students per class (compared to 25 students per class currently).
* Tao Nan School will be introducing an integration model through a pilot bicultural programme (BICEP) starting from the Primary 4 cohort in 2007. GEP students can chose to join high ability non-GEP students in two BICEP classes for about 50% of their curriculum. The GEP students will continue to have separate classes in English, Maths and Science.

By now I believe most of the GEP schools already practice this. My DS in Catholic High also go through the same. Those under HA category are trained so that they'll excel when they move to their secondary.

By the way, where will the selection test be held?

My DD mentioned the second round test will be in Nanyang on Wednesday or Thursday in some week.

Test center will be by region from what I can see...thus depending on where you DS/DD's school is now, they will congregate with students from surrounding school during that two days.

BTW...my DS got thru too....so proud of him no matter what the final outcome is.

While I dun think I heard about marks being deducted for wrong answers, perhaps it can be true to avoid tikam answers.


Knew of a case where the gal came back to say she left 16 maths questions blank (cannot remember round 1 or 2) and we all thought no chance liao. But the gal is in GEP now, but of course, her strength is in language, not maths.

Interesting comment here. So if one is especially strong in one (e.g. lang / math) he/she still stands a good chance to get into GEP??? Any comment on this?

Yes, students who are especially strong in either subject will have high chances to go into GEP. This is the information got from ex-GEP students. He is weak in math and especially strong in english, in reverse, his brother is especially strong in math. Both were in GEP finally. They have their own tuition center called mindstretch.

To all whose kid will be proceeding onto round 2…please make sure they bring along the notice as I was told that without that, they might not be able to enter the exam hall (or at least more troublesome…)
