Hi, anyone can help me with this?

Ahmad has $40 more than Ben. After giving 1/5 of his money to Ben, Ben now has 7/8 of what Ahmad has. How much did they have?

        Thanks a million!

                :thankyou: Aceumaths and Mathizzit!!

aceumaths , I can solve with Algebra but doubt if my child can fully understand.

Mathsizzfun, saw your solution, got it! It's clear and easily understood. Will show to my DS when he comes home.

                Cheers!

sorry, need help for 1 more quest

When Janice bought some files, the average cost was $4. After she bought 1 more file at $16, the average cost became $7. How many files did she buy at first?

                    Thanks

                      Hi

\"Decrease\" in cost of the additional file
= Increase in average cost of the original number of files

                      So, $16- $7 = ($7-$4) x N, N = original number of files
                      N = 3

                      Total number of files = 3+1 = 4

Alternatively, you can also assume that the cost of the additional file was increased from $4 to $16 ie increase of $12 and this is averaged over all the files such that the average cost increase from $4 to $7,
                      number of files = $ 12 / ($7- $4) = 4

                      cheers.

Once again for your time. Took a little time to digest as I'm better at using Algebra. But finally saw the light!

                        Cheers!!
