      wonderm:

I agree your ds' teacher should not have done that and I believe it is not common practice.
It does not have to be common practice to be an indictment of the system. When one teacher feels desperate for materials to teach her students, enough to have done what my DS teacher did, then there are countless others who also feel desperate but dared not to do what she did.

System flow through of educational materials is poor.

Teachers and students BOTH suffer... and parents pockets suffer. I paid $200/= a month for Chinese tuition just to get access to materials. The moment I figured out the type of materials required, I stopped tuition. My son said he could manage if we could source for equivalent materials from contacts in top schools ... and also from China.

This is not fair to students whose parents are less resourceful and discerning.

I dun wanna point fingers at the teacher because I think that is too simplistic. It's like punishing a child for stealing food. If a child is fed enough, why would he/she steal food? It is a systemic issue when individual teachers feel the need to parasite off the tuition industry. For every child who steals food, many more are hungry. For every MOE teacher who parasites off the tuition industry, many more are desperate for good materials to teach with.

Up to now i’m still wondering what kind of oral materials/notes the other schools have because we do not have friends whose kids are in these schools. And ds’s school does not give materials. Bought oral practice fr Popular and the material/ passages seem to be too simple since ds can read those with ease and he usually only borderline passes Chinese.

I bought those too, and then I got someone to help me add phrases to up the difficulty level. Those are really too easy to be much use. But linden2000, did not your child just complete PSLE?

This is a systemic issue. All they need to do is to set up an online sharing platform that students and teachers can access. Then teachers everywhere and students everywhere can access material. This prevents a lot of resource duplication (teachers have a lot to do as it is) and ensures a better flow through of high quality materials throughout the system.

            Something like this?

Thanks for the suggestion. I probably have to work on adding sentences when I can find the time.

Nope my son is in P5 this year. Er what gave you the impression he completed PSLE? 😄 At his current standard, 😓 if he is doing PSLE.

DS came home and said that his CL Teacher had asked his whole class to hand up resources provided by their tuition teachers, for her to compile and give out to the class. If this does not show that MOE is lacking in materials and methods, then I dunno what does.

This reminds me of what my niece told me. Her teacher saw her drawing some Science concept maps, happily took it to reproduce for the whole class and thereafter kept asking her for more on other topics. Maybe some teachers don't realise that children do share with their parents what happens in school....

Hi Jesschan, ur niece's teacher should not do that! What she should do is to ask the whole class to draw their own & in this way they will learn more. The teacher should come up with her/his own map. By taking her student's work like this is really irresponsible!

yes, i understand. But your son is way more committed than mine. Mine is still in lala land thinking that things will work out fine for him without hard work.
