Club SAHM

Can you all share with me what’s ur daily routine is like?
I seems like pretty busy with preparing food, cooking (3 meals) and fetch DS from sch. I spend about 3-4 hours on public transport daily as his sch is quite a distance from our current place. Even housework like marketing, laundry and mopping needs to spread across the week to do. -

Hi mummies,
Been following this thread closely. I have 2 kids, 4 and 2 years old. Increasingly tempted to be a SAHM too, especially reading all the wonderful posts here. But two issues are bugging me :
1) Not sure if we can manage on a single income
2) My mum might flip (I mean, she will most certainly flip)
Really confused about the way forward
hope you ladies will give me some inspiration!
1) Use a spreadsheet to list down all expenses you can think of. Essential expenses. Needs, not Wants.
Income minus total expenses. If it is not flagging a furiously negative number, you are assured you can manage on single income
2) Strong objection from my MIL. She hated me for a few years. No choice but to bite the bullet :nailbite: -

Perhaps change to a nearer school, if he's still in preschool.
If in primary school, then school bus is the obvious option to save some travelling time.
Breakfast eat bread. No need to cook le.
Lunch porridge, throw in dishes, one pot cooking.
Dinner more time consuming. So I usually steam dishes. Hardly use frying pan. At most fry omelette. -

:welcome: kero, I am a 13 months old SAHM mum with 2 dd's , p1 and k2Hi mummies,
I just joined the SAHM club 4 months ago to takecare of my P3 DS due to his activities after sch and late sch bus arrangement.
Last time when I want to resign from the workforce, my mum is the one who objected as she was helping me to takecare of my son then and start complaining waste of my education etc.. But she really spoilt my son to the utimate. We cannot tahan and hence decided bite on and JUST DO IT!
Hope that I can learn more from you all here.

Hi kero,
For me, I cooked the soup in the morning and serve it for lunch and dinner. Lunch could be simple - fried rice/noodles/spaghetti and add fried egg, hotdogs or so. For dinner, I will try to cook 2 other dishes with rice.
For groceries/errands, I do it in-between their enrichment classes. List down the things that needs replenish, it could save u repeated trips to supermarkets. -

Initially, my mum was against when I decided to quit my job to become SAHM. Firstly, she felt that a waste of my education. Secondly, to give up a job with excellent promotion prospects is a waste. Thirdly, financially incapabilities, totally dependent on - too risky if anything arises that disadvantage to me. However I told my mum that I needed to be with my kids if hb travels frequently. I really felt guilty of putting them in infant/childcare for nearly 12 hrs while I was FTWM. I cant cope with kids and works when hb was not around. In the end, she supported my decision.nerov:

My MIL didn't say anything when hb announced to her. However, she keeps telling ppls behind my back that I am a liability or even a burden to my hb, juz wanted to enjoy life at home, spending her son's money. Really hate her :stompfeet: -
Thank LLX04.
Sleepy, i do not understand why u not working ur MIL would object and hate u? Shouldn’t she more happy that her grandchildren are well taken care off?
For me, I myself cannot take bread daily hence we have a some simple choices - sandwiches, french toasts, steam buns, chee keong fun, fried carrot cake, yam cakes, oat cereal, cakes
Lunch - i would cook simple meal and bring to DS to eat in sch before bringing him home. Fried noodles, fried rice, pasta, bake potatoes, bake rice
Dinner - 3 dishes meal including 1 soup.
My son only goes to for piano class on weekends, that’s the time i shop at ShopNSave. I like to go wet market to get the chicken, fish and seafood hence it is like 1-2 times a week. -
ectanz,
Hugs… maybe ur hubby should express to ur MIL that it is HE who wants u to be at home to takecare of the kids. My hubby in fact is the one who always wants me to stay at home to takecare of my son since he was born, i delayed for a few years before i finally did it and of coz’ we need to cut down on those WANT stuffs in life and bite our bullets. -
:? on the sharing about MIL's reaction.
My MIL feels that it's a man responsibilty to provide for the family. My SILs are SAHMs.
My parents' only concern is that I do not have enough money. My father always wondered why I kept saving and do not spend. Guess he has his answer now

Thanks all for your advice! Really glad to have this community of SAHMs who are ever so encouraging!
Do you worry that someday perhaps the hubby will face issues at work, e.g. retrenchment which could derail the family since it’s on single income? There are so many cases of PMETs losing their jobs once they are above their 40s…
Maybe I am just thinking too much… But while I really want to be a SAHM, I have so much worry. Need to contemplate fully before taking the plunge
