ok…so much have been said about early preparation for psle 2013. Our kids are in P4… should have finished SA2 by now. What are the concrete plans you’re taking for you kids now. Next step?
For my dd, her greatest struggle is Math. I heard there are good tuition centres like mindchamps and meow tuition agency. Thought of signing her up. What are your feedback on the centres? -

different tuition centre suits different students. find one that fits
to realise the weakness in math now is one step forward, rather than finding it out later on at end of Pri 5 .... that would be desperately desperate -

Note that though most topics are covered in P5, there are some not covered yet and will only be done in P6. So may not be able to expect your kid to do the whole paper (esp. Maths and Science) at end P5. Languages may be possible.
well, hopefully my dd can do most of the top school P6 papers by 2013 end...... :boogie: that is at the end of her P5.....

Question: if your DD finished all the top school P6 paper by year end P5, what is she going to do in the P6 year? Repeat doing the papers again?
I know early preparation is good, but parents need to note that kids get bored doing the same thing over and over again. Start them doing practice paper too early may make the kids very \"sian\" before reaching PSLE. Trust me, the schools will load them with so many practice papers that the kids wil be very \"bored\" with doing papers and just wanting PSLE to be over.......Don't let them get bored at start of P6, make sure you maintain the momentum till PSLE. -

yes, i am going down to meow tuition centre next week - they said starting P5 preparation on 22/10. Being a slow learner, better sign my dd up for the tuition so she can have a headstart come january. DH said let her try for a couple of months if no good, then at least there's time to switch her to a better centre in jan next year.

I agree must pace our kids in doing papers n also assessment bk. We don't want them to burn out before PSLE.

BTW, my DS is only taking PSLE in 2014. Hence I am still in honeymoon mood.
I think it is important to build strong foundation year to year. So, if you are revising and ensuring the kid has more solid foundation for that year's work, yes, that needs to be done. But doing and completing all the top school prelim papers by end P5, I'm not sure I will encourage that. This is just from my personal experience. Well, other parents will have their views, so it's up to individual. -

too much assessment books also overkill - sometime just reinforcing mistakes ..... back fire !
prepare early, build strong foundation so that when doing revision in pri 6 on earlier years' scope, it won't be so alien to the kids -
My idea of starting early is to instil good study habits, routines and discipline like getting my dd to pay attention in class, does her homework independently and complete at least 1 hr revision daily. If she does that religiously, PSLE year will be just another year albeit a little more time needed on revision than normal.
Subjects wise, it's always better to know what you kid is weak at early too. Eg. from P1, I can already sense dd is weak in maths and by P2 when I confirmed that she needed more help than the sch or myself can provide, I send her for tuition. Cos she will need the foundation to move on to higher level. Most of the time when a kid can't do P5/P6 maths, it's not that they don't know P5/P6 topics, it is he/she still can't grasp fully some topics in P3/P4.
DD's strength has always been on the languages and she enjoys reading but mostly fictional books. But, most cloze and comprehension passages are non fiction when in P5 and P6. In order to build her 'non-fictional' vocabulary, grammar and style (which differs greatly from fictional), I have slowly started her on reading non fiction bks (which she dislikes) this year. But I don't feel stressed out cos I know if I 'force' her to read 2 non-fiction books a mth, by the time P6, she would have read 72 non fiction bks.
Similarly for Chinese, I started her on writing journal this year but she is not very conscientious in doing that. Will have to enforce that a little more next year
My point is that when we start our kids early in preparation for PSLE, its more than
doing exam papers or assessment bks. And I don't encourage doing papers and assessment bks beyond their level or in excess either.
