Nan Hua is a sap school. But then how come it shows 'Chinese' under mother tongue and it offers HCL as well. Whereas for RV, it only shows as Higher Chinese (there is no Chinese offered at all). I think they should make it clearer in the book that they gave.Verysuperkiasu:
The sec posting book that primary sch give to the students - if the school in that book just states 'chinese' for mother tongue - it means Higher Chinese is not compulsory right? On the contrary, if under mother tongue it states Higher Chinese, then it is compulsory - am I right? So for school like Nan Hua, for eg, Higher CL not compulsory?
Is Nan Hua a SAP school? If it is I would think that HCL was compulsory. -

Actually not ALL SAP schools have HCL as compulsory. But...they don't offer any other languages as Mother Tongue option, that's all. That's the very very main difference. So if your child takes Malay, Tamil, etc. You cannot apply to the SAP school under S1, even if the child was in the affiliated primary school. It has to be done under *appeal* - directly to the school during S1 option period.

Altho' for those doing chinese, most WOULD take HCL just simply to get chinese out of the way so they don't have to do it in JC. -
I heard from my cousin that this year PSLE was very easy…

Sigh...this is a very tough choice. Whether to send ds to a sch which offers HCL or not. He is not very good in Chinese. Prelim got 82 below average in his class. He has not done HCL at all in primary sch. I heard students from RV were appealing at Commonwealth becoz they were 'kicked out' of school as they couldn't get 60% for HCL. Very stressed leh - don't know whether he can cope or not. Of coz if he can pass HCL - so much the better - no need to bother at JC. But what if he ends up getting less than 60% for HCL then he may have to settle at a school which is not very conducive.

But all schools, not just SAP schools, offer HCL, don't they? For those students that qualify to take HCL.

Actually eyeing on RV lah - coz it's near home and good school. But must get at least 60% pass in HCL i heard.

Verysuperkiasu:
Ok, I was not entirely correct. Not all schools have HMT. The list is given on this MOE's document:

Eligibility for HMT is Either:
1) Meet the minimum requirement set by MOE or
2) Pass school's internal qualifying test
MOE's minimum requirement is:
a) Top 10% of the PSLE cohort; or
b) Top 11%—30% of the PSLE cohort and meet the language criteria i.e. an A* grade in the MTL or at least a Merit in HMTL.
Interested pupils can apply to offer HMTL when they report to their secondary school in late-December. They will attend HMTL lessons at their school if the school offers the course, or in a designated centre if the school does not. Please refer to the list of schools and designated centres offering HMTL (64kb .pdf).http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/admissions/secondary-one-posting/option-exercise/option-form/ -

Ds'tutor said that majority of the makers commented that this yrs psle is considered easy overall except for Maths problem sums just a little bit challenging , other than that the rest r standard level . So this yr t-score will not be high .
Wondering, whether her info is accurate
