English Assessment Books

It is about which EPH book to use for Viocab and Grammar. Is it Challenging English 4in1, or Complete Practice in Vocab, Comprehension and Grammar.

My DS (P3) has used Complete Practice in Vocab, Comprehension and Grammar, but his vocab has not improved. Ought I take a risk and give him the Challeng English 4in1. I prefer this as we are time constained and there are less questions to do but these questions are inherently challenging. Then I wonder whether I should persevere with Complete Practice in Vocab, Comprehension and Grammar - to ensure that he has a foundation in basic vocab.

I am having a dilemma. My son has a tutor who gives him daily homework in English Language, Comprehension, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non Verbal Reasoning.

Janet, any thoughts, on which book to use, please. I know you have used both with your DC. Do you have a preference, and why?

I prefer Challenging 4-in-1 if time is tight. But his Synthesis, Comprehension Cloze & Graphic Stimulus need more attention. So we actually focused on these 3 areas before his exam. Ignore the comprehension as his enrichment centre has a way with him...ie to write complete sentences.

For my younger one, I use individual books for grammar, vocab (or 2-in-1) like 'New English Grammar & Vocabulary Worksheets', comprehension & cloze. My kids are put off with the sheer thickness of 'Complete Practice in Vocab, Comprehension and Grammar'

For the vocab building, are you try to get him to learn a list of new words, including spelling, meanings, usage?

I may be barking up the wrong tree........If you have the list of the words and I know time is a factor, how about using games, and using the words in daily conversation, eg: I'm hungry, when are we having lunch?
, I'm famish, when are we having dinner? For games, can use scrabble and fashion a fishing word game. Or use the words and make up a silly and funny story.

If you are not adversed to right brain method, you might consider to record the list, meanings and usage, and play it to him when he's alseep. I've not use this method yet but will try next year when DD1 has show and tell

I know my suggestions are not very mainstream but sometimes assessment bks are not the best method.

My daughter's P1 booklist had the grammar guide (blue cover) which Champion posted. Think that book should be able to cover the basics till P3...bcos the yellow cover is meant for mid-pri to P6.

I'd bought the grammer guide from my DD's school during her P1 but I find it too brief. It doesn't give much explaination. :sad:

This is a tough section to master. I've compiled all the compre cloze from past year papers, filled up the answers for my son to read.
What you can do is classify the different compre cloze under diff themes like 'history', 'animals', 'hygiene', sports etc. There's this assessment by Casco...Grammar, Vocab and Comprehension Cloze which I buy every year.

I would consider Conquer Cloze by SAP. My DS is getting better at com cloze and this book has helped.
