        Hi

        both questions are similar..

        1) Amount earned for every 15 boxes = $ 3 x 15 + $ 8=$53
        220/15= 14 R10
        Amount earned = 14 x $ 53 + 10 x $ 3=$772

        2) For every 50 watches repaired, amount earned = $20 x 50 + $60=$1060
        5560/1060= 5R260
        Number of watches she must repair to earn $5560= 5 x 50 + $260/$20 = 263

        cheers.

              Hi, please help

              Jolene and Penny had a sum of money. Jolene gave Penny 0.4 of her money. Penny then gave Jolene 1/2 of her money. In the end, Jolene had 3 times the amount of money that Penny had. If Jolene gave Penny $125 more that what Penny gave Jolene, how much money did Jolene have at first?

              Thanks

                Hi

                for this type of question, it is best to draw a diagram to see the transfers...I will use units here..

                After Penny gave Jolene 1/2 her money,
                Jolene = 9 units
                Penny = 3 units

                So, before Penny gave Jolene her money,
                Jolene = 6 units
                Penny = 3 units ... Penny gave 3 units

                This is after Jolene gave 0.4 of her money ie 6 units = 0.6 of Jolene's money at first. At first, Jolene had 10 units ie Jolene gave 4 units to Penny

                4 units - 3 units = 1unit = $ 125
                Jolene had 10 units = $ 1250

                cheers.

                        Hi

                        math olympiad question?

                        I think you can find solutions to similar type question in the math olympiad thread. You can solve this using the Fibonacci numbers.

                        Nx = number of ways to go up x steps

                        Number of ways to go up a 10 steps, N10
                        = Number of ways to go up 9 steps and then do a 1-step
                        + Number of way to go up 8 steps and then do a 2-step
                        =N9+N8

                        working backwards, we have N9=N8+N7, N8=N7+N6... N3=N2+N1
                        N1=1
                        N2=2
                        N3=1+2=3
                        N4=2+3=5
                        N5=3+5=8
                        N6=5+8=13
                        N7=8+13=21
                        N8=13+21=34
                        N9=21+34=55
                        N10=34+55= 89

                        there are 89 ways to walk up 10 steps using 1 step or 2 steps.

                        cheers.
