Is digital piano sufficient for grade 9 exam?

Hi, i used to use a Yamaha Digital piano (weighted keys - Hammering system). The latter meaning, the keys are lighter at the end and heavier at the beginning like a upright (normal piano). I used it UK and did my grade 5 exams. I had a Yamaha Arius YDP140. It has a very good review and is a one-step down from clavinova (CLP series) and must cheaper. Yamaha Arius YDP160 is the newer model of YDP140.


Digital piano loses it’s value after 3 years. So, technically, the resale will be 1/3 off every year. The sound is good. The feel will be more superior compared to a keyboard. but, it will never feel like real upright. u can read up more. Digital piano comes with pedals ! surprise surprise!

But if your child is not continuing, a digital piano will be a good buy and fun!
Of course a synthesizer will even be better if your family is into having fun playing and recording and improvisation.

I reiterate this advice for people scouting for a good digital piano, regardless of its age:- combination of good key touch, realistic piano sample and powerful amplification system. Go try any Yamaha CLP 280/380/480 with volume set at 1-2 o'clock position alongside an acoustic piano to know what that means .

The problem with digital piano is that after the warranty period is over you better pray hard that electronics inside will not spoil. For acoustic piano, any damaged part can be replaced easily and very seldom complete overhaul is required unless the piano is in really bad shape.

This is why digital piano loses its value very fast after the warranty period is over.

In the past, DPs lose its value because of steep technological advancement. However, in recent years, the sampling technology has become so defined and accurate that what buyers should look out for now is the overall quality of the DP and how that creates a great playing experience.

As with any electronic equipment, parts will subject to deterioration and materials used are subjected to wear and tear just like an acoustic piano. That is why anyone who is keen in getting a DP should also consider a credible brand with good after sales service. FYI, my kid's 3 year old DP is still wonderfully maintained with zero breakdown.

Like it or not, any piece of electronics without warranty will decrease in resale value very quickly. No matter how good the condition is, nobody want to spend a lot of money on a piece of electronic without any warranty. There are external factors that can damage a digital piano like say an electrical surge. If no warranty already then the repair will be very costly, as compared to an acoustic piano.

That being said, DP can be a good alternative to beginner pianos. Beside Yamaha and Casio, other brands such as Korg or Technics produce DPs that are extremely value for money if your budget is under $2000.

Anyway, good used DPs are not diificult to find. I reiterate my advice to those who are getting a DP to look into the combination of good quality piano sample, good feel of keyboard and powerful amplification system.

Any yes, do choose wisely because the resale value not be good due to the mental model that DPs will depreciate in value drastically. As such, if the intention is to buy and resell later, then expect lowballers. No offence to anyone.
