PSLE 2009 - English Paper
-
lovingmum:
My daughter said the papers were much easier than her prelim papers. However, 2 of her classmates did not manage to finish their compos....I think time management is very important and the kids must be constantly reminded about it. while trying their best to write the best compos, they had totally forgotten about the time, this is definitely not to their advantage.
time management is extremely impt for Maths paper. I was told that many of the kids cannot finished the last Section (most marks) in the previous years. I have many \"dry\" run with my kid... when she do test papers at home, I will cut half an hour off the actual time required. -
My students found the English papers easy. The topics for compre, cloze & compo were covered during tuition, so they had a better understanding of the passages and what to write for compo.
I think generally it’s the EXPOSURE to different topics that’s more important. Reading extensively from magazines, news articles, books, etc on different topics ranging from high-tech science magazines to nature to 15th - 17th century literature.
I hope they found Maths managable. Have yet to speak to them. -
Below is one of the synthesis in PSLE EL paper 2009
He is worry. His two pet birds refuse to eat.
about_________________.
Sadly, my gal’s answer is incorrect.
Another one, grammar,
He is appreciative towards/for/of/about the treatment he receives. -

High-tech mags to nature to 15th-17th century literature? Are you referring to GP? How can it be for a P6 student? Am I missing something on the Eng standard expected of a P6?The topics for compre, cloze & compo were covered during tuition, so they had a better understanding of the passages and what to write for compo.
Reading extensively from magazines, news articles, books, etc on different topics ranging from high-tech science magazines to nature to 15th - 17th century literature.
Anyway common topics on theft and beach are also covered in schools. So, for kids who don't go for tuition, please don't feel deprived. -
I agree.

If you look at past year papers, sometimes the cloze passage is on dungeons, monarchy, etc. If students are not exposed to reading these topics, they do not understand at all.

I've also came across comprehension on technology. More about advances of technology, latest technologies or robots, etc.
A good school teacher would have given them articles related to these topics to read & discuss in class. I started reading simple stories about monarchy ruling when I was in P4, introduced to us by my school teacher. We were encouraged to borrow books on different themes and we had 1 library session per week (teacher brings us to the library, tells us what type of books to borrow for that week's discussion).
Reading widely never kills
Reading about different topics is to allow the child to have a basic understanding of the topic so that the English paper does not end up as a General Knowledge paper. With background knowledge, they can focus on filling in the blank with the appropriate words instead of wonder what the whole passage is talking about. Same for comprehension, if the passage is about something that you do not understand, it's very hard to answer the inference questions.

If you put it this way, then you have to put it like this: birds'; bird is wrong. -
